I think I may have put the impeller in backwards.

I have a 9.9 evinrude dated 1974. It was only used 3 years then fogged and stored. Restarted once in a while just to re-fog it.

It ran great last year. I just changed the impeller because it was cracked when I inspected it. I lost track of the way the other one was installed because I was interrupted.

I may have put the new one in backwards. When I started the motor in a drum, it was pumping water out the weep hole when cold. Then as it warmed up the water flow from the hole quit but I could see exhaust pulses from the weep hole.

Does this sound like the impeller was backwards and has broken again?

If you install the impeller backwards, it will flip when you start the engine. You might check and see if the hose for the weep hole is plugged or restricted.

disconnect the hose from the fitting on the block..see if you have a flow...if not try a piece of mechanics wire or a piece of the string off a weed wacker in there...its its fine do the same to the hose..chese the hose with the wire and check the tell tale fitting on the pan where it discharges...make sure its not clogged ..

I had a piece of the impellar stuck in the block fitting..had to remove the fitting so it could pass and all was fine after

Re: 9.9 evinrude impeller install

I pulled the thermostat cover and ran a weed whacker line into the water chamber. I got about 6 feet in. Apparently this port circles around the block because I did the same thing after I dropped the lower unit and it was not coming out the exhaust tube or water inlet.

What I did find was the water inlet to the thermostat chamber was mostly blocked.:( Cleared this by blowing compressed air up the water pickup tube.

Motor now runs great and has been running at a slow troll speed in a drum for the last hour. Spitting plenty of water out the weep hole.:D

THANKS EVERYONE
