Re: 9.9 Evinrude

Thanks Guys. Just to narrow down a few things so I won't have to purchase things if I don't need to (my wife is starting to notice the spending already) what shall I buy first, the compression tester or the spark tester?
I guess I'll probably need both of them sometime in the future anyway. Remember, this boat is my first, but surely not my last. We all should upgrade.

Thanks again,
Chris

Spark tester is < $10 and you should be able to find compression tester for < $25. I'd get both.

The first thing I always check ed in my 30 years as a service tech was SPARK. It takes 2 minutes and eliminates or isolates alot of problems. I wish I knew how many times I sold some one a carb kit that needed the magplate cleaned and pts replaced. These engines run suprisingly well one one cly, three cly with one out are almost impossible to hear. and v4 and v6 will also run well on 1/2 the eng. they all lack top eng. Bill

I bought a nice little compression gauges at SEARS...works great, has a few adapters even, press release for starting over, the highest reading stays till you release it...it screws into the threads of the spark plug hole only hand tight...

you can crank the engine over by yourself..and go back and the reading is waiting for you...

was not very much money!!! maybe $30

Re: 9.9 Evinrude

Hi guys. It's been a couple of years since I have responded (been busy, had a baby, you know) I finally looked in the the outbopard issue. I dropped it off at a shop in Barrie (Sandy Cove Marine) and he said one cylinder has very little compression and the motor is no good anymore. I find this difficuly to believe. The motor ran before I brought it in but with very little power. The fact that he's saying that it can not be fixed, is this right. Reminder it's a 1981 9.9 Evinrude long shaft. One of the cylinders has about 10% compression.
I brought it in to see if he could change the ignition coils as I knew there was very little compression in one cylinder. What shall I do here? Chris

Re: 9.9 Evinrude

four options

rebuild it( new piston or new sleeve and new piston, rings, gaskets, some bearings, labor) More $ than a running 1981 9.9 is worth, if you pay someone else to do it..

save it for parts

sell it for parts

Give it away
