Can anyone tell what carb is used on a 1994 to 2001 9.9 motor that has the electric start but also has a pull start rope? I do not know if the dealer set this up to be electric or it came this way. I want to change the 15 hp carb now on it and just wondered if it would take a regular electric start carb part# 436779 or a rope start #436778 ? Thanks much

What model # is your motor ?------Why do you want to change the carburetor ?-----You may find that the difference is in carburetors is a fitting to inject fuel with the electric primer, and nothing major.

Motor is a relere 15 horse and I want to put a 9.9 on it to be legal on 10 horse lakes. The 9.9 is a #436779 electric. The #436778 is rope start. What is the difference in parts on a rope start and an electric start? I found a 9.9 online but did not know which model it was. If it is a #436779 I would not have to change anything. If it is a rope start can I change it to electric or not and what changes needed. Thanks

Probably no real difference between rope and electric; I put a 77 15hp electric start on a 74 rope start with no difference in mounting at all, the 15 throat size and jet were probably different but the engine ran just fine. If like down here the decal on the cowl will give you away. Why not just put a 9.9 decal on your cowl?

The highspeed jet is smaller for the 9.9 model.----The difference between electric start and manual start may well be just a fitting for the electric primer hose.----I would have to shovel a pile of snow 4' high to get in my workshop to have a look.-----Just install a 9.9 highspeed jet and call yourself legal !

The 9.9 and 15 from 93 to 01 is the same overall except for the carbs. You can change carbs without any other mods. The reason I want to change, is in Ohio the motor is titled and if DNR checks and bam your caught. They may never get too technical but I don't want to get a ticket either. If I had a 9.9 to get the base with the smaller bore, i would be good to go. I needed to know about the rope or elec. in case there was something I needed to add or take off. Thanks

Dave? Your signature reads W. Virginia and you said here in Ohio - close enough but, I fail to see where if "They check the title" you'd make any progress. I live in Ohio and I know over the decades the DNR has " off and on " required outboards to be titled. I didn't know they started back up.
For what it's worth, the one lake in my area that has a HP restriction has DNR rangers that are pretty sharp on outboards. It's been said they can tell by the wake. They have checked the Model / Serial on mine as well.

This one has a title in Ohio and my son lives just across the river in Ohio and I live just across the river in Wv. The serial numbers will tell that the motor is a 15. No matter what I do the title will still say it is a 15. Thanks guys.

As far as I know, there is really no difference between the carburetor on a rope start 9.9/15hp than a rope/electric start on same motors

If you change the carb you may well turn your engine into a 9.9, but what's the decal on the transom plate say? If you got inspected and that plate says it's a 15 HP engine you'll have a lot of explaining to do to get out of that ticket.
