I'm willing to bet that the impeller will be safe to order. If nothing else, remove your old one and see how it compares to the new. When all else fails, you can most likely say "oops" and return it.

Oh crap! That sucks. So basically, you got a motor with the lower unit removed and waterpump parts gone?

That's good. Don't give up. That impeller may turn up. At least we can hope. What you can do also, is search out ebay for motors like yours and see if you find impellers for it too. That same impeller is likely used in several similar models.

Hey look, I found you a manual :D

I found you an impeller

Do you need a lower unit seal kit?

Order the impeller, and the drive pin, and the upper seal. Also, get a new seat and a duck bill fuel pump element. The hardware for the pump is generic, and I think it consists of some nyloc 1/4-28 nuts. If the impeller housing is missing, still quite gettable from boatsportandtackle.com or certified parts corporation. 217.586240 IS your model number, and it's a 1980. Oh, yeah, ya got it on the run now! These will be good things to do while you wait for ed Stoller, or Mr. Crabs to make that stator your biatch. Also, if you have to replace any of the fasteners that retain the lower unit, use stainless.

Hey graver, glad to hear you found your model number, don't give up, those 9.9 Tecumsehs are a great running engine, you won't get into a any outboard of thst size cheaper than what you will put into this one dollar wise even if you have to replace the electronics.
Sears has the whole pump assembly housing w/impeller listed for 50$, I'm sure you can do better on shipping price with someone else like CPC.
Its not a bad idea to replace the pump housing due to the drive shaft bushing wear and the galling thats usally present on the inside of the pump.
On the lower seal beneath the waterpump on the 9.9 its a three piece unit, the seal, the plastic seal retainer and the O ring that goes around that, as a matter of fact I recommend a complete reseal of the whole lower unit...I buy my parts from Certified and its really cheap insurance to replace the whole mess. don't mess around with ebay for parts.

I'm working on a shift rod seal thats bullet proof consisting of the tiny new replacment SKF seal and a fat OMC O ring to act as a wiper and a brass bushing that retains the O ring. I have a small brass plumming union that as time permits I'm going to turn down by hand to fit the shift boot well and be made to just drive in....basically to hold the OMC O ring from sliding up.
The 2 leakiest seals in the lower are the shift rod seal and the main shaft seal, you can't buy the old shift rod boot and wiper anymore and the new replacment seal is a joke but I think we need it there anyway but a fat O ring is about the only choice for a wiper and frankly I think the OMC O ring would do the whole job but the little seal is cheap and you have some redundancy, keeping it all in the well is the real problem.

Well, there ya go, Gravernator - ya just heard from Dr. Tecumseh himself - If ya can't get that 9.9 porker squealin' by spring, it ain't gonna be 'cause ya had no expert advice available. Shoot, some of these people will actually make or modify parts if that's what's needed. I have one of those crapweasel chinese lathes, and I know which end of it the shavings fall out of. I await developments.

Re: 9.9 gamefisher stupid question

I just finished the reseal on my 15 10 miniutes ago, Drinking me a diet Dr pepper and I'm re-thinking??? my brass bushing Idea, may be alot of work for very little advantage mahty.
I have some 3/8 brass washers that with a tiny bit of triming to clear the water pump I could just glue it over the shift well and it will fit like a glove, the fatty OMC O ring an't wanting to move up anyway as far as I can tell just playing with it shifting back and forth, let a little Ohio river crude settle in there and it will be tight as a tick...that brown 3M stuff I have should work for glue and I could get my $3 back for the brass union.
Man I'm almost ready to go to the river and scream and fly....................................

Hey Graver...if you don't mind me asking, what line of work do you do?

Re: 9.9 gamefisher stupid question

using your model number at sears I get this part no. for the whole kit ES190129 @ $67. mr brixent has them listed for $39, http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/brix_enterprise_002.htm read his piece on water pumps and you can call him and chat about the shipping and the weather..hes a nice guy, www.certifiedpartscorp.com will most likly have them laying around too and shipping might be cheaper, you just look under vintage and call dianne or vern and they will be nice to you as well. and yes the sierra part will work on your outboard, its most likley what your getting anyway. there all I ever use. If you need a new pin you could use a needle bearing...thats all they are.

I was thinking with your user name you might be a grave digger....LOL
