I am going to look at a 1967 9.9 hp Evinrude. I see no reference to this hp in my manual. Is this the same as a 9.5 hp?

I browsed through this article, possibly too quickly. A 9.9 is actually a 15 hp toned down to 9.9 with a smaller carb? this was done post 1974? did they even make a 9.9 in 1967? or is the seller as cofused as I am?

No, they did not. If it's 1967, then it's the 9.5 - the 9.9/15hp didn't come out until 1974. Like bubbakat said, the 9.5 is a completely different beast. Actually, compared with the other outboards Johnson and Evinrude offered in '67 the 9.5 is completely different.
1967 Evinrude 9.5hp model numbers:
10722
9722 and
9723

To recognise a 9.5hp verses a 9.9; the carburetor of the 9.5 is on the rear-starboard of the engine while on the 9.9 is is on the front centre (like most outboards). The 9.5's carb's mouth faces upwards while the 9.9's faces forwards.

Thanks for the info guys, bubbakat thank you for the publication I can't wait to read it in it's entirety. On the phone the guy sounded sure that it was a 1967. he was probably confused about the hp, or maybe he was confused about the year?I will check it out this weekend.
