I have an 85 Johnson 9.9hp long shaft that I'm replacing the impeller on.Problem is that I've got 2 o-rings left and my clymer manual(for2-300hp,91-94)isn't real specific about where they go.The larger one,1 1/2"od x3/16",I assume, fits right on top of the pump housing, for ease of re-alignment.Correct me if I'm wrong. The smaller o-ring,5/8"x3/32",is the one I'm really not sure about.I read one link from the forum about it fitting into a notch by the splines on the driveshaft, but my 85 doesn't have a notch.Should I just slide it down to the bottom of the splines

There should be an o-ring at the top of the driveshaft also..Not sure if these are included in a water pump kit though..Im sure an expert will chime in.

Re: 9.9 impeller replacement

thanks for the diagram Rick...I do see a small oring,#59,on something by the 5" extension, but don't know what they're showing.Any ideas? Also, is it normal for the 5" extension to be gunked up with unburned oil, water, etc.I plan to adhesive M(1000) the extension to the upper and lower ends.

Re: 9.9 impeller replacement

The oring...#59...goes into the extension tube slot on the inside to seal the tube from the engine into it.

Yeah you get some "stuff" in the extension. You really don't have to use any sealant on the mating edges of the extension piece. Won't really do anything.
