Engine starts and idles fine. Accelerates smoothly to max. rpm but cuts out after a few(maybe less) minutes of running. Noticed the fuel line bulb is flat and will not firm up as though no gas in line. Tried running engine at slower speed and periodically squeezed the bulb and engine continued to operate fine. Obviuosly it is starving for fuel but is the most likely culprit the engine fuel system or the fuel tank?

For the record I've replaced the supply line from tank to engine (with new bulb)

Any ideas?

Re: 9.9 Johnson Outboard

Bulb going flat could be from restricted fuel tank vent or bad connection at the tank. Make sure it is clear or try running with cap off and see if that helps. Also, try running a different tank and see if it improves.

Rick is right on, Ill just add there is a strainer on the dip tube in the tank, could be
plugged. Also sometimes if the connector at the
tank isnt on all the way bulb will get flat.
My brotherinlaw once put the connector on backwards with that result.

James ,If all good suggestions above doesn't remedy problem, the primer bulb itself may be defective.

Does the hose have a kink in it or does it go through sharp turns? Happened to me :(

Gentlemen:

Thanks for the advice. I have pulled the tank siphon tube and it was pretty gnarly. Cleaned both the screen, inside of tube, and cleaned the ports on the tanks bayonet connection with carb cleaner. Checked at idle speeds for a lenghty time with no pumping of the bulb and it seems to work fine. Will take it to the marsh in a day or two whenever the weather warms up to test at high speed. I may just replace the tank if problem still persists. Thanks again!

James M. Anderson

PS, this is a great site.
