9.9 johnson question

got a get running 1977 9.9 Johnson with one issue. the throttle linkage from the end of the handle to the gear under the hood has so much play is so worn the I can turn the grip from slow to fast without any speed change. how difficult is it to remove and replace the throttle linkage/shaft parts?

need a parts diagram to see what you have: http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=43f46ae4-b586-48b4-949e-f228ee99d325 . The gear at the bottom of the tower might not be matching up with the one at the end of the control shaft, or something similar. As I recall, it's possible to install the gear in such a way that the teeth won't mesh. Have to look at it up close and personal.

Or they are broke which is very common on them

turned out to be a fairly simple fix. just had to remove the nut and bolt attaching the handle to the cowl. then remove the retaining clip at the front of the gear shaft. the parts all slide out. was surprised to see they are plastic and not aluminum.
