9.9 Johnson VS 15 Mariner?

I own a 1975 Johnson 9.9 and someone I know has a 96 15 hp Mariner for sell.Would I notice any power and speed increase by stepping up.It will be on a 14ft John boat that I use for duck hunting.What can I expect?Thanks!

yes you would notice a differnece between the two...the mariner will be faster and more powerful since the horsepower is rated at the prop not the crankshaft like the older johnson is. your older johnson is probably only 7-8 h.p at the prop. get the mariner, you will not regret more power...

Quite a noticable difference. A lot more guts on take off and it keeps on going even with heavier loads. I have a '97 15hp Evinrude and truly enjoy the power it puts out from such a small package.

Thanks for the input.Now I have a question on what its worth.He bought it in 1998 new off the floor.It is a 96 model.The boat dealer just couldnt move it I guess.He is asking $700.00 but said he would take $600. What would do? Thanks!

If this thing was never salt water used, that's a real good price in my neck of the woods. Over here it would probably sell for about $900- 1000.00.<br /> <br />Ask to try the motor out. If it runs like crap, don't buy it. No inexpensive fixing will ever make it run right if it isn't running well now. I'd do a compression test on it too.

I'm with cobra. Here in the midwest, that engine would fetch big bucks(900+) If it runs well and looks like it has been taken care of and not neglected, i'd definately buy it...heck if you don't i might.

If you go for the 15 put the 9.9 in the back of the garage for when the 15 goes south. those 9.9s are bullet proof. I got one.

the 15 should be more powerfull you now have 50% more HP how could it not be better?
