I recently installed a 9.9 electric start remote control Mariner outboard as a kicker motor on my fishing boat. It does not charge the battery's. How can I test the system or hook it up to charge the batteries? Thanks.

BatterIES??? You have a 9.9. It can hardly keep up with a single battery at wide open throttle. Do you really think this little horse can charge more than one? But if you want to see if it is charging at all, connect a voltmeter across the battery terminals. Anything higher than 12.6 it's charging (engine rpm above 1500 or so). Anything less it is not. It should charge through the existing battery cables.

Please help. I am trying to figure out how to connect my Mariner 9.9hp to the batteries to recharge them as it runs. It is on a sailboat and i just need to keep the minimal things powered. Currently using solar chargers but SLOW and unreliable. Any information would be wonderful. Recently found the the electric start kit has discontinued. Any nuggets of wisdom there would be great too. Hearing something about a rectifier? New to motors. Seasoned sailor.

Re: 9.9 Mariner Charging System

JUST GENERAL INFORMATION::

Due to all the hype about the use of solar panels to charge batteries many think it works!! To create enough current to charge a deep cycle
battery in 8 hours you would need to replace your sails with solar panels. The low rate of charge from a small cell just ruins the capasity of your battery. Your battery is charged through the heavey wires that go from the motor to the battery. That is assuming the motor has an charging system installed. If the motor is off and you read12.5V at the battery terminals. When you start the motor you should read a higher voltage even at idle. To charge the battey you will have to increase motor speed to produce enough current to put much juice back into the battery. Good Luck !
