9.9 Merc controller question

I have received a used Quicksilver remote control unit for a 1995 Merc 9.9 HP electric start outboard. Here is a picture of the unit...

There is a screw for increasing the friction but what is the screw for the 'detent'? And what is the "Throttle" button for on the lever?

throttle button is for warmup. push in button and move lever forward it increases throttle without engaging gear. there's a detent for neutral position.

Thanx Diaric. Looks like I need to do a thorough cleaning of the button insides as it is tough to push in and slowly eases back out after pushed. Lots of gunk buildup over the decades I guess.

I will be using this as a kicker on a 24' boat that I'll be taking off shore. I'd rather run a 9.9HP for 3 hours of trolling instead of a 225HP. Now I need to begin the research of a set of longer cables. I need at least 14' of cable length and have 11' now. Any idea if there is such a thing as an 'extender' for the cables or just buy a new set?
