Recently picked up a pretty clean 1987 long shaft Johnson 9.9 with electric start for use on my C-Hawk 22 sport cabin as a trolling/auxillary motor. Before I bought it I checked the compression 100-110 on both cylinders and started it up...........ran terrible, but I figured it was a dirty carb and old gas as it had been sitting for about 2 years.Today I ran some fresh gas through it and still ran the same.Pulled off the carb and cleaned it but not much there........started it ,but still the same would run a bit then cut out.Its getting fuel, so I checked the spark on the the 2 new NGK's in it ...very weak spark.Checked some other plugs I had and all about the same weak spark and finally no spark and won't start now........I checked the kill switch on the end of the tiller -ok,I'm thinking the ignition module was going, going now gone.....Manual says check with a CD voltage tester? Any Ideas

Have you pulled the flywheel off and checked the points? There supposed to be gapped at .20 I don't know a lot but that's what I would check next. Lots of YouTube videos on how to do that. I need to do that to mime as well. Good thing is those kits are super cheap I believe under $20.

There are no points on an 87 model 9.9 hp.
