9.9 on 16ft v question

i am considering buying a 16ft v hull aluminum boat with a 9.9 merc on it. The price is around 2500, and the boat is an 04 looks like it just rolled off the show room floor. Now my questions are, how fast do you think a 9.9four stroke will push a 16ft alum. v hull? is 2500 a fair/over/under priced purchase? this boat all looks new, trailer, fish finder, motor, steering wheel and throttle/side drive the whole deal but with only a 9.9? anyway curious as to ppl's view.

There's not much info to go on in you're post (like brand of boat, style of hull, or is the motor a big foot model) but I would say at best it will be a dog.

tracker, 16ft alum. v hull, 9.9 merc(model unknown, but 2004), besides that not sure prop or anything off of that, thats all info i have just lookin for round about, 10,15,20 mph or?

you are wanting to buy a boat, and do not know what you are buying. do your home work and find out what you are getting. tracker makes many 16 footers, get the serial # if the motor, and either post in the merc ob forum, or ask a dealer.

post a picture of it.

As reference only, my boat (avatar) is a 14 footer fiber that weights 275 pounds + full gas tank & fishing stuff ... and alone in it will perform as such using GPS:

With a 1981 9.9hp = 18 mph
With a 1997 15 hp = 17 mph (gets out of the hole faster)

With 2 passengers the 15 performs better but I have not checked speed yet.

The rig you have described will not plane, period. 10-12 mph maybe, and kicking up a heck of a lot of wake when doing it.

Actually, I think it will plane. Tracker boats are quite light, and if the user is by himself with not a lot of gear, I think it would run about 15mph.

Since you could buy a brand new 16' tracker WITH a brand new 25hp Merc for 8k I'd say buying a used tracker with a 9.9 for $2500 is not a good deal. Also the brand new one includes a 46lbs thrust trolling motor.

I can guarantee the 25hp will plane out nicely

What is the max hp stamped on the coast guard sticker? If it is 15hp, you should be ok with a lighter load and good weight distribution, if its 20hp your way underpowered but might still be ok, if its anymore then that you should not buy it unless you want to sell the 9.9 and upgrade appropriatly. Iam sure the rating is closer to the 30-40hp range depending on many factors, most 14' open tinnys with bench seats are rated at 25hp.

The owner is probably selling it because of poor performance. It might plane out with one person but not with a moderate load.

Here's my $.02,

Have a 14 foot Al. Duroboat, weighs maybe 250 pounds empty. Came with a 05 Mercury 9.9 Bigfoot 4 stroke. With the stock 4 bladed thrust prop, it would not really plane. With just me in the boat the rev limiter would kick in by the time I reached about 13-14 mph. Switched to a more speed oriented prop, and with just me in the boat it would hit 19 mph on flat water (by GPS). But added weight quickly dragged it down. With me and two teen-agers in the boat it was again struggling to get on a plane.

Have since ugraded to a 20hp.

My guess is that on flat water, with just you in the boat, and trimmed just right, it will maybe sort of plane. Provided your fast for a couple of days before hand

None of us can really say for certain since we don't know the EXACT model of the boat, but the original poster is describing a rig with a side steering console - in the 2004 model year that'd most likely put him in the Guide V-series - and those aren't lightweight boats. The current model 16' guide, which they will sell with a 9.9, is rated for 75hp, and weights almost 1300 lbs.

It will be a dog. Unless you're boating on a horsepower restricted lake, you will not enjoy it. Do not buy without a sea trial.

My 16.5 Lowe 165BT with a 25 Johnson is fine for just me and runs 22mph. With another person I need to drop prop pitch to plane out comfortably and not have to run at WOT 100% of the time.

Hmmmm, that sounds familiar, 2004 tracker 16'er, 9.9 4-stroke,,, what an odd combination. Was this listed on craigslist, did the add look like this:

The same thing was advertised in Las Vegas, pretty sure it's a scam.

Ya I agree with fisherdan, I wrote the seller asking some questions and he fed me some crap that the boat was in storage terminal at the airport in cleveland and he had a previous buyer that his loan didnt get approved but he had already paid shipping so shipping was free not to mention he couldnt do a face to face meeting. (DING) right after reading that the light came on that add fisherdan posted sounds like a total scam, kind of odd iv never seen a scam like that on craigslist but dont shop there much either.
