the motor runs great, nut at half - full throttle it jumps right into neutral. i can hold the lever in the froward position and it sounds like the motor hits something 1-2 times a minute. reverse works fine in full throttle. any suggestions? are gears still available for the engine?

Most likely a worn clutch dog. A fairly easy repair. On some motors you can flip the dog so the less worn reverse side engages the forward gear.Parts may be available depending on the year.
My info indicates it is a 72 9.5 hp.Uses the old style 2 piece gearcase.

But you dont need a prop, you need a clutch dog and probably a forward gear. and BTW, that's a 9.5hp, not a 9.9hp.

Wait!! Before you tear the lower end apart, you might check the shift linkage, before doing so. My very first repair job was on a 60hp Gale with the same problem. After nicely rebuilding his lower unit, I found that the blot on his bell crank was loose. It's a common problem. It happens a lot on the JonhyRudes.

Thanks for the info lbentz!! which bolt on the bell crank? and where do i find the bell crank? i would like to try that before tearing into the lower unit. Does anyone know what prop pitch i should go with for a 14 aluminum boat? i need a prop because when i bought the motor some one had used some kind of liquid metal ( jb weld??) on one of the ears of the prop that was chipped. the piece finally broke off. and im sure its going to vibrate a lot. thanks for all the help guys!!

You don't have a bell crank, just a simple lever which you can observe at work by taking the cover off the engine and watching it lift and drop the shift rod as you move the lever from forward to reverse.

You should make sure that the shift rod connector is properly attached though. The connector holds the two sections of the shift rod together at a point close to the intersection of the midsection and the gearcase. You will need to take the four bolts loose and let the gearcase down about 1/2 inch to see the connector. Then you will need to determine that the screws pass through the recessed parts of the rod.

The problem is common because the screw has to be completely removed to catch the recessed part and people try to take shortcuts so that the rod is too long or just loose.

Click the thumbnail to see the connector.

It could have been loose to start with and gotten worse. The chances are that you may have to go in fix the dog, but you certainly will want to make sure that the shift rod is not the problem before you do.

The 9.5 should shift sharply and hold well when it is adjusted correctly. If the gears don't feel like they are really grabbing when you shift, it may be the linkage and not the gears at all.

Yea, most JohnyRudes have a bellcrank. It's been a while since I saw a 9.5, so I stand corrected.

Funny thing is, it's rarely ever the gears that causes motors to jump out of gear. It's usually the sloppy linkage or linkage being out of adjustment. If there is clean oil in the lower unit, then your gears should be fine.

Re: 9.9 sport twin jumping out of gear

i have clean oil in the gear case (no metal shavings) i dropped the gear case down to check the linkage, and the bolt is going thru the notch in the linkage. i talked to a mechanic at the evinrude dealer in milpitas ca, and he said that if you hit something hard enough you can cause damage to the dog in the gear case. the big chip in the prop proves that it hit something rather hard. so it looks like im going to tear into the gear case this weekend. does anyone know what to look for on the gears/dogs when inspecting for damage? or where to get parts? are the seals still available? should i do a impeller or anything else why i have the gear case off? thanks again for the info everyone!!!

I'm having the same problem with my 66 9.5 Evinrude. Does anyone have a pic of the dog so we know what to look for? Thanks

Re: 9.9 sport twin jumping out of gear

The dog runs back and forth on the splined portion of the propeller shaft. The gears are always in motion so when the dog's ears engage the forward or reverse gear the propeller shaft moves with that gear. When the dog is disengaged, the gears continue to turn with the engine but the propeller shaft stops turning.

This link shows a fairly typical clutch dog: http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_129...0490526--**********.398415457--view_id.222004

Go to the parts catalog for the 1968 9.5 and look at the gearcase diagram: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e
