Just so that you know. I have a 1975 9.9Hp Evinrude and when I fire it up, it does take a little time for water to spray out the exhaust relief hole. I am pretty sure it doesn't take 2 minutes (more like about 30 seconds) but compared to my other motor (1961 5.5Hp Johnson) which shoots water out instantaneously upon start up, I have noticed a delay with the 9.9Hp. I believe the reason for this is that the thermostat on the 1975 9.9Hp needs to open a little before water passes out the relief hole. As you run the motor you will notice the spray increasing and decreasing from that hole as the thermostat opens and closes. I assume this is normal operation, because mine has been running like that for years and works great.

great information guys!!!! sick close with me .... im in my shop with my laptop so ill be closer to the outboard GODS (you folks) lol.... i found the culpret thermostat is so clogged up with white chalky crap its not even funny... the whole area is full of this crap almost like wet chalk i cleaned the thermostat oiled it up it works i can push the spring in and out very easy...my boat guy has to order one so i have to wait 2 days !!! .... what if i dont put the thermostat back in and go without like my old ford truck i know she takes a while to warm up but she never runs hot lol....

Would it hurt to run without the thermostat ?

Without the thermostat the cylinders and rings will wear more quickly due to being out of round. Coking and plug fouling will increase. Temporary running to test the water pump should do no harm. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=111014&gd_row=7&**********=664869301

got her cleaned out cleaned up new gasket new thermostat ....no water coming from pee hole....BUT after 45 mins running wide open throttle not only could i keep my hand on the head for 3 seconds without it burning myself... i can touch anypart of the motor i want for as long as i want .... water is pumping just not coming out of the pee hole...

TESTED HER OUT.. had to take her to the river and oh my good lord what a difference between a 6 hp and a 9.9 i had no idea... went from 6.9 mph with the 6hp to little over 24 mph with the 9.9 i had no idea these little motors had so much power... holy smokes Im glad i didnt find the 15hp i was lookin for lol... i think the 9.9 will work just fine for a lil while.... thanks for all the help not really worried about the pee hole right now i know she is pumping water so ill attack that later.... THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS

got the pee hole pumpin... clamped the water hose to the tube in the lower unit blasted it with water for about 20 mins while i sat there and stared at it, lol... and all of a sudden i heard a pop and water started flowing from the pee hole.... low and behold she is workin perfect.... pays to be persistant

ok got her all tuned like a fine oiled sewing machine fires first pull with about 3 inches of rope... purrs like a kitten

now i want her to look as good as she runs everything looks good except the Can, lid.. what ever you guys wanna call it... the paint chips off when i spray it with a garden hose lol

can i get evinrude white ?

Do they make evinrude white lol

and can i get new decals ?

the ones that are on it look painted of... looks factory but its not a sticker did they paint the lids in 1975 can i get stickers ?

would i be better off making one from the web and painting on myself ?

Try posting a "new thread" for each different thread. You started off with a water pump question, then finally to decals. These are two totally different threads. Many people on this board do not want to read through several pages of threads on different topics. If you post a new thread, I'm sure you'll get an answer faster...but again, you cannot complain about free!
