9.9HP or 10HP???

Just curious what the difference is between a 9.9 and a 10? It seems like the 9.9's are more popular and I see more of them. Why did they even make a 9.9? why not just get a 10? it's a tenth of a horsepower difference?!?!?! You don't see cars with 249.9HP......

because alot of waterways have a 10hp or above restriction. And IIRC you have to register any boat over 14' with a 10hp motor but I could wrong on that.

Lots of small lakes have under 10HP restriction

Any boat with 10hp and over has to be registered. At least that's how it is in Canada and I'm pretty sure the US is the same.

9.9 and I don't need letters on my boat. 10hp and I do.

Or at least I should. I just need to convince the boat cops that my BF100 that is rated at 10hp has been de-tuned to 9.9 as my boat has no letters.

Any lakes I've seen with a hp restriction allow up to 10hp (7.5 Kw)

Regulations on boat registration , vary from state to state .
Here in Tennessee , all vessels/craft using mechanical propulsion , or , sails , must be registered , no exceptions . This means if you have an innertube , and , rig a battery and trolling motor to it , you must register it .

Of course the upside is it is a non - title state , so a bill of sale signed by the seller , is usually all that is required to register the boat .
Still , you would think they could waive registration for craft under 14' and 10 HP .....

A whole bunch of laws make it sooooo much more convenient to have under 10HP.

In Ohio, All watercraft needs registration numbers unless used on private properties . The point of the 9.9 is to squeeze the most horsepower out for use onlakes/reservoirs that have a 10 hp limit.

Like the points on you operators license. At 12 you loose them, with 11 you can keep them, but hit 12 they are gone.

Bottom line, the 9.9 is just a sticker. For all intents and purposes, it is a 10hp. Even the model numbers typically start with 10XXX

Gotcha. Thanks everybody. The reservoir where I usualy go has a 10HP max.

In VA I'm pretty sure any vessel that is powered has to be registered.

the law should be 10 hp and under, not under 10 hp.

Heres a thought. I got two motors for my 14 alum. One to meet the requirement for a lot of water (a 3 hp Johnson) and one for the other lakes (a 15 hp Johnson) the boats max.

Oh yeah, and a trolling motor for the "electric only" lakes and oars for the "no propulsion" lakes

In Florida it means the difference of age. To operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 hp or greater and you are under 21 years of age you must have completed a boaters education course.

Too bad they don't make all the North Easterners take one when they get down here.
