I have an older ted williams 9.9hp motor, I belive the model number is 21758710. Tecumseh motor. The problem is the moter starts good and runs for about 10 min. than stalls out. Once it stalls it will not restart for at least 3 or 4 hrs than the 10 min thing again. Any sugestions I dont know year. Is the motor air or liquid cooled. Plugs are new and seem to be getting good spark
Any help would be great

21758710 indicates an Eska built 73 9.9 water cooled. Is the spark good when it stalls? My thoughts would be check the tank vent is open and clear. Is the primer bulb collapsing?Does it quit like you turned off a switch or does it falter and fade out. When it stalls feel the head CAREFULLY should be too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you.

A couple of reasons this might happen:

1. Fuel tank vent closed.
2. Engine overheating.

For the first, open the vent. If the engine keeps running, you're home free.

For the second, you probably have a bad impeller. Replace it, and it'll probably solve the problem.

3. Ignition system failure when hot. Does your 1973 have the two coils that mount to the engine head...one for each plug? If so, you have the electronic ignition. Coils are available, but the rest of the system is almost impossible to find, since it's the most common reason for failure on those models. I have one like yours, but a 1974, and I have simply given up on it, even though it runs on one cylinder.

I have the same motor and same problem. The motor would run well until you accellerate and it seems to overheat and die. I noticed the coils are swollen and checked with sears for replacements but was told they're discontinued. I'm looking for an aftermarket place to replace these coils, any suggetions would be appreciated.

For the second questioner: If you don't have the electronic ignition model, the one with the two coils mounted externally on the head, try www.certifiedpartscorp.com and call the number you find there. Have the model number of your outboard on hand, along with the serial number. They may have the older magneto-type coils under the flywheel, as may a small engine shop. The engines are by Tecumseh.

If it is the electronic ignition, the head mounted coils are available here and there, but for about $100+ apiece. Most often, though, it is the parts under the flywheel that fail. They're not available anywhere, since it was a common failure point on those engines and all the spares are gone. No more are being made, and will never be made for these 35+ year old engines.

Running perfectly, the Eska-based 9.9 and 15hp outboards are worth less than the cost of replacing the ignition systems, I'm afraid. Worse, there are two distinct styles of the stuff under the flywheel, and if you find the wrong one, you need the matching flywheel.

Very annoying. As I said, I've given up on mine.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think you are correct. The motor started stalling a few years ago. I brought it to a small engine repair shop were they installed a carb kit and fixed a fuel line. The guy noticed erratic spark at that time and suggested I replace the coils. I left it for a year and preceded to search for parts. I found the parts on Sears' site but they're discontinued. Since than I now cannot get a spark at all although the magneto seems to be registering some voltage when cranked. I'm just tring to find some aftermarket parts, if possible :)

Well, go to that website I mentioned. Call the number and talk to the guy. But...be prepared for a shock if he has the parts. They're WAY expensive.

They emailed me back and no luck. I spoke with Sherwood 906-466-2180 at discount-marine-parts.com and he said they could rebuild the magneto for about $200 including shipping. I think it's the graveyard for this puppy...
