I have a 9.9 1972 Merk. I have been trying to set the points and can not find the right way to do this? I can get it to run on the top cyl. or the bottom cyl. but not both. A dealer let me look at an old book once and i read that they had to be set at 195 degress past top dead center, but you have to have a wheel and a pointer. I looked at merk and thay want 200 dollars for it!!!!! I need a lot of help. This motor is like new or i wouldn't fool with it.

Thanks
Mac

Re: 9.9Mercury points.

Even though the correct way to install the pointswould be to set the first set to .020 and the othet 180 degrees from that there are thousands of them out there that have both set at .020 and run just fine. You have anouther problem causing it not to fire, the only thing that is common to each set of points is the kill switch it shorts 1 to the other to kill the engine so you might check it closely.

Hold every thing I just said, I just realized its a Phaze Make Ign. Take the points out and change both of the insulator blocks for them and your problem will be gone. Sorry

Re: 9.9Mercury points.

I put new pionts and charge coils in . The points came with them. It dose not leak spark on either cyl. It will run on each cyl. and start on each one but wont run on bout. Motor starts on two pulles. I have put points in outher years of merks and had no problem. they say 1972 was bad year to set the points on. I have taken it to three other dealers and they want nothing to do with it. One dealer said it takes a older person to know how to do it.
