Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

Hello. Just ab small update. I have the transom cut, 2 pieces of 3/4 " glued together, 1 coat of resin and fiberglassed one side. I'll fiberglass the other side tonight and I'll have pics tonight. Question is what's the easiest way to wrap the sides? I tried laying down the edges and they just kept rising . I rounded them slightly withy a sander so there was no hard corners. I'm using 1.5 oz mat. Thanks again.

Do you have one of these? It's a mat roller for fiberglass. About $10.00. Or, You can make your own using small washers and fender washers and a foam roller handle. Make sure to have some acetone on hand to keep it soaked in after rolling. As the resing begins to "Kick" you will be able to get the mat to lay down smooth on the edges with the roller.

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

Finally had a little time to work on my boat. Tried to glue transom to boat but found my clamps not clamping the transom to the skin I used 2x4 and bolted them together using them as clamps but I found gaps. My question is should I drill through the outer skin and bolt the outer skin to the transom to clamp it and then remove bolts and patch the gelcoat later? There are places that I can't put clamps on.

Another update. I got the transom glued this last weekend finally. I used a bunch of clamps from harbo freght and some 2x4s bolted together to clampthe outer edges that the clamps couldnt reach.lastnight i started filling in gaps and filleting the edges using p.b. i had one gap where it will take alot of p.b., is it safe tousejust the epoxy and cobisoll for the big gaps or do i have to add anything else to it. My computers down so i cant add pics yet and my droid wont let me. Thanks guys

how big is big to you if 1" fill with what you are using , if on the sides whatch for sagging of the mix . add some chopped csm 1/2" strps to the mix . best i could tell you with out more info . i had similar problem with my transom install worked just fine . good luck . let me know how it comes out.

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

well, last week I laid 2 layers of 1708 on the transom, thought I rolled out all the airbubbles, finished uppp about 10:00 at night. Came back next day to find airbubbles. I just grinded off most of the fiberglass I just laid and I'll try it again this Saturday but I'll start in a.m., bummer. When I left it I thought it was fine, I don't know if I didn't have enough resin or what so I'll try it again but this time I'll really soak it. Wish me luck, I ran out of us composites epoxy so I'm gonna try this max bond epoxy, I'll let you know how it goes

did you have enough on wood to prevent it from sucking up resin from 1708. if yes ,you should apply first to wood then lay 1708 on .if not to big of a piece best way i found is to wet out 1708 on a flat work area (clean) of course then apply it to wood

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

I sealed with epoxy about 2 weeks ago, sanded down a little to give the new epoxy something to grab. I'll try wetting the 1708 first, I like that idea. A lot of the airbubbles were around the edges. I can't get those to lay down for anything. I'm going to try to put epoxy down and let it set a little while till tacky then put the tape on. Thanks for your help, without you guys I would've never made it this far. Thanks again

When I have a pain in the butt corner With wood under it I staple it. Cloth can not try to flex up. I assume you are cutting the corners to allow them to lay flat also. This trick makes life so much easier.

cut corners like proshadetree said and where ever else it wants to bunch up, also check your fillets i used a 1 ""pvc pipe to ensure a nice radious some people use a tablespoon. if you just grinded the edges you may get away with just a over size tab in . watch how thick your transom is getting tou want to keep it close to original.

Thats why I prefer polyester resin, by the time it looks good with no bubbles its just about cured and set anyways.

Nice to see some galaxy boats getting a second lease, so any of them go to the shredder.

Well nothing to update yet hadn't had any time to work on my boat. I will be refiberglassing the transom tomorrow. However I'm just about out of us composites epoxy but I have 3 gallons of max bond epoxy. I havent read any reviews on max bond yet. You think i'd be ok using it or should I head to west marine and buy a gallon of their epoxy for a hundred bucks. This close to christmas that kinda hurts. Thanks for all your advise

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

Well its been 4 months since i made any progress to to weather and being a coach for my sons baseball team. I finally have time to work on my boat. Real quick question though. I have my stringers fiberglass and ready to fasten to hull. However, when i dry fit them today i noticed that the ends of the stringers touch the hull, but in the middle of both stringers theres a 1/2" gap. I know once i put the pl premium on the stringers wont touch the hull but i wanted to make sure this was ok or is the hull warped. I have the cap sitting on hull to help keep its shape till i start putting the deck down. Thanks forall your input. (The stringers are straight by the way. I looked and theyre not warped.

Good morning to all. Just an update. I finally have the gas tank floor in and the tank sitting on it. I also have 1 stringer glued down with pl. I just laid a thick bead of pl down and put the stringer on top and let dry, is that fine. Next is 2 layers of 1708 hopefully this weekend. Been usibg this max bond epoxy and it seems to be ok.

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

finally had some descent time to work. i got the stringers in, glued down with pl and 2 layers of 1708, except for about 2 feet where i ran out of 1708 and running low on epoxy. I will be adding some cross braces and bulkheads to the stringers when i get my next order of materials in. My question is do you think i should add stringers to the sides of the gas tank? The main stringers stop at the gas tank. your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated. that 1708 really soaks up the resin. Just another thanks to everyone that has helped me through this. I'd be lost without all your knowledge.

Good morning. Just looking for your input on my stringers from the post above. They stop right about the dashboard area, at the gas tank. If needed i will add more stringers to the sides of gas tank. Thanks again.

Re: '90 19' open bow galaxie restore progress

Hello everyone. Just an update. I have the stringers,, bulkheads and some extra stringers all glassed in. I have the deck peices cut and about half of them with a coat of epoxy on the bottom. Hopefully tomorrow i can finish coating the other deck peices. My wife and kids are going on a week long vacation to iowa this thursday which gives me friday night all day saturday and all day sunday. Along with weeknights afterwork. Im hoping to have half the deck in by friday, the rest saturday morning. Question for you guys, i really dont want to screw holes in the deck to the stringers. Would using pl premium work to hold it down? Im trying to not have any holes anywhere in the stringers, deck, etc. As soon as i get some pics i'll post em
