I have a 1987, 3 cylinder, 90 H.P. Mercury Outboard with a jet drive. Operation in lake or river: Motor will not start after being run initially on cold start up or after being run for a while and shut down hard to restart with warm or hot engine. With hose attachment in yard: Motor starts every time. I have heard the impeller in the jet drive needs to be reshimed to alleivate this problem, but need more info. regarding this. Appreciate any help.

rws

Is that a 3 or a 6 cylinder? 1987 was the changeover for the 90's.

IF it's the six, a leaky exhaust plate can be a a known culprit. If you're getting water in the cylinders, fix it before damage escallates. Also they cool off pretty fast, try a cold start on it.

If it's the 3 cylinder 90, OR a jet drive issue, someone else can take it from here.

-W

A friend of mine had a Bayliner Reflex with a 90hp jet that did the same thing. It turned out to be one of the Power Packs, or stitches.

Hope this helps.

Craig

When you say powerpacks, are you referring to the powerhead?? What do you mean by reference to stitches??

Power packs might be the wrong term. Stator and Trigger are the terms I was thinking about. Have them checked.

Hope this helps.

Craig
