I have 1991 Evinrdue 90hp V4. And I am wondering how many poles the altenator has in it ? I'm only asking because i'm trying to figure out which position to put my tqach selector on ? It has the numbers 2,3,4,5,6 on it only. And my local Evinrude dealer told me to put it on selector 5. Where as I have always had it on selector 4. Now my boat reads higher rpms then it use to. By about 300 or so. I just want to make sure it is in the right position for my engine. I have read the number of poles on the altenator is the number on the tach you use ? Is that at all correct ?

According to the Teleflex Instrument Technical Reference I have, all Evinrude/Johnson motors have 12 pole alternators, with the exception of the under 70 hp 2 cylinder, 2 strokes which have 10 pole alternators. For teleflex tachometers you would set the selector switch to 6p for a 12 pole alternator.

As a double check, you can buy a digital inductive hour/tachometer from Amazon for $14. They are handy to have when working on outboards, motorcycles, lawnmowers, etc.
