I HAVE AN 1986 90 HP EVINRUDE, WITH A CENTER CONSOLE BOAT. THE ONLY THING I HAVE IS A FUEL GUAGE. I AM TRYING TO HOOK UP A TACH (I NEED THIS) THE WIRING HARNESS SHOULD HAVE LEADS FOR THIS RIGHT?
THE ONLY FREE WIRES I CAN SEE ARE TWO PAIRS OF THREE WIRES 1)PURPLE, GRAY & BLACK AND 2)PURPLE, BLACK & WHITE w/BROWN STRIPE, THEY ARE COMING OUT OF THE HARNESS ALONG WITH THE IGNITION AND POWER WIRES. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE FOR?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Usually on an Evinrude there is a plug on the end of the control box for the tach. you cna pick up the plug at about any marine supply.

If that doesnt work Stinky, My OMC Johnson V4 tach wire is purple(73')fyi. Check the schematics in clymers manual or find the tach pulse wire at the engine terminal block( if I had a manual now I'd look it up, will do so later if u need) and if you cant trace the wire still for some reason check with the resistance meter on your cheap voltmeter for continuity from terminal block to the control box wires you mention. You can use any extension cord or plain wire to extend the reach on your volt meter leads.

The purple (B+), Grey (sender) and black (ground) are the ones you need.

Good luck!

I checked, and my send(tach pulse) wire is gray, not purple. Clymers schematic is not entirely clear cut, but it appears that there is an accessory plug on your model(Superman) that has 3 pins, a plus, ground, and send with colors per Dhadley.
