My 1989 90 hp evinrude has low compression and I need a economical fix. I have looked at the iboats powerhead vendors and with the prices as they are should I just buy a good used engine and keep mine for parts? Or am i just asking for more problems? I like the johnnyrudes cause my 87 150 johnson and the 90 have given me years of trouble free service but I have never needed a powerhead before. Thanks for any advice.

1987 9.9 mariner
1987 150 johnson
1989 90 evinrude

Spring,

I am ASSUMING that you have low compression across a four cylinders?

If so, have you tried a decarb.?

Re: 90 hp evinrude

Thanks for the reply djohns. I have 30,65,90 and 110 psi in the 4 cylinders. When I removed 1 spark plug it had a dent in the curved electrode and is the same hole with 30 psi.It appears that a piece of the piston ring broke off and hit the plug. Coking maybe?
What is decarb?

Spring,

If nothing else, I think I would pop the heads off of it, just to have a look see.

You can rebuild it yourself for about $2-300.00 per cylinder. Add another few hundred for inceidentals such as carb kits, water pump, etc.

Thanks djohn, I think I will pop the heads off and have a look. Can't hurt anything at this point. However, the marine dealers in my area (GREENVILLE SC)are very proud of their products. It may cost a little more here unless I find someone that has discount prices. Why does marine stuff cost so much more than automotive ?
