90 hp Merc outboard (1979) Overheating

I'm looking to buy from my neighbor a 1979 Merc outboard he got stuck on a sand bar when he finaly broke free the motor wasn?t pumping water any more when he got home I used rabbit ears to flush the sand Squirted water and compressed air thru exhaust. Still not pumping what is the chance that he got sand in the water jackets and clogged them up? Or would it be simple impeller?

Bill, It is likely that he needs a new impeller. You can put a hose on the water tube after you pull the lower unit. Use low water pressure and see that it comes out of the exhaust tube, and telltale
