Unit runs great on motor flusher. Runs great at full throttle on the water and a trolling speed. I have to hold the key in to choke the motor to get it to transition from slow to fast once on plane runs perfect. Idles smooth also. It just developed the VRO horn warning of pulsed horn every few seconds. Manual indicates no oil in the VRO but the tank is full. 2 problems. Bogging down and VRO warning horn.

TIA, http://www.hunt-fish.com

Re: 90' Johnson 115 VRO boggs down

A friend has suggested running Marvel Mystery oil in a small tank of gas through the system to clean out any possible varnish in the carbs. Has anyone tried this before? I've used Berrymans b12 carb cleaner before on other motors with great success. I've been told not to use solvents on these carbs. Any suggestions.

Check the translusent oil tube going into the bottom of the VRO unit, you should see oil in it, it not, thats why the alarm is going off. Also, Im so happy I just fixed my engine (simular issue), I want to spread the word that it was very simple... loose carb screws and bolts - it was sucking air in the power RPM range. Check your fuel lines going to each carb too. - mikec

Disconnect oil tank sender wire at engine(1wire) if alarm stops , tank sender/wires bad. Check gasket under flat plate on top of carbuator, sometimes the gasket will be sucked into passage ways, which are idle and midrange paaasge ways. When you suspect VRO problem run 50/1 mix in fuel tank until problem solved.

Thanks for all of the replies! I have checked all hoses and connections. There is oil in the sight tube at the base of the VRO pump. I fired it up on the hose and there was no oil warning horn. However, I've noticed that it's idleing rather high at 2000 rpms. My other motor an Evinrude 115 same year idles at 1000 rpms. I also noticed a broken plastic sleeve on the carb linkage that the throttle lever rests on. This may be why the idle is high. I'm rigging up the test tank for the mystery oil after I do a visual on the carbs.

Thanks Again!
John
http://www.hunt-fish.com

WOW! What a difference. I mixed 2 Oz of Marvel Mystery oil with 2 quarts of regular unleaded gas in a small portable fuel tank. used a separate fuel hose with a primer bulb and ran this mixture through the motor for 15 minutes on the motor flusher. I can now go from dead stop to full Throttle with NO hesitation. Before the motor always died unless I held in the choke. Be prepared for white smoke while you run this mixture through the motor. I reconnected the boats normal fuel line and tank and ran it for about 5 minutes to make sure I ran all of the mixture out of the carberator. What a great way to do a liquid rebuild on the carberator.

John
http://www.hunt-fish.com

John, I have exactly the same prob you have experianced. The engine starts OK, idles in gear OK, going from idle to full - bogs and dies UNLESS I push the enricher on the key. Once at about 2500RPM, runs perfectly.

What is MArvel Mystery oil? Where did you get it? Sounds like there must have been a blockage in the off idle passages.

I've taken my boat to a service agent who said the mixture was way off. He adjusted the off idle mixture screws however the prob is still there. I adjusted some more and found the idle was starting to smell of strong petrol and running rough so backed them off again.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

David,

What is Marvel Mystery oil? Where did you get it? Sounds like there must have been a blockage in the off idle passages.

Marvel Mystery oil is an additive that you can get at Wal-mart or any auto supply. I mixed it with fresh gas in a separate outboard fuel tank with a new gas line as specified in a previous post. I wanted to make sure that the fuel line wasn't part of the problem. It cleaned the buildup in the carberator and the engine stopped acting like it was starved for fuel and wanting to die. I have since done this again since the boat sat for about 6 months. Bad feature about the VRO is not being able to run it dry. You can mix it right in your normal gas tank if you want but, beware it will take the paint off so be careful not to spill it. This is a lot easier and cheaper then re-building the carberator. If you have a great amount of buildup you might try running a few gallons of the mixture thru. The motor will put out white smoke while the mixture is burning. It's all of the gum being disolved and burning. This stuff works great on lawn mower engines too.

Hope this helps,

John

http://www.hunt-fish.com
