Does anyone know a source for a serpentine setup for my 90' 5.7 Mercruiser?

I'm swapping out the motor so I figure this would be a good time forthat upgrade too.

Thanks!

Ayuh,... I don't see it as an Up-grade either....

With the Serp. belt, if it breaks, you're done...
With the V-belts, if 1 breaks, you're only out that particular component....

You'll have to find a later model motor,+ strip the Whole front of the motor, to get All the bracketry.......
Including the reverse rotation waterpump....

Howdy,

I have seen them on ebay before. I'm sure you know you would have to change front crank pulley to the "right" one etc.....

You would also want to ensure that the PS and alt have the right brackets etc....

Is that you flying that 182 in your picture?

Cheers,

Rick
Yep, that's ol' reliable taking off with yours truly behind the yoke.

Yeah, I was thinking about changing everything. I've done that conversion in a few hotrods but never in a boat.

Thanks for the link.

A 182 is a great airplane!! of course the tailwheel is on the wrong end but that's just a preference!!;)

I would love to do a serp on my 454 but it does require changing a lot!

I figure it would be easy enough to carry around a spare belt...if I'm replacing all the accessories anyway...hmmmm, is the GM performance serpentine setup w/o A/C the same setup? Of course the actual accessories would be different.

Eh, may not be worth the hassle....

I did my spin training in a Super Decathalon...but that's been my only tailwheel time.

That old 182 and I have been through alot together...great airplane!

Do you fly too?

It is if you can scrounge the parts to do it. A serpentine belt is far more reliable (IMHO) than multiple V-belts and MUCH easier to change if it does "break". They'll last far longer than you should ever run one.

I've owned a 1947 Stinson since 1981.....and my "hobbie" job is involved with flying.

I figure that if I change the serpentine belt yearly I should never have an issue...I'm anal retentive when it comes to maintenance...comes from flying I think. I don't like it when stuff breaks!;)

The 47' Stinson is one of the best looking taildraggers out there IMO. I don't use the 182 enough right now, I've thought about selling it and buying a little 140 or a Stinson...something to just get some stick time in, but the market is in the toilet and the 182 is too nice to give away. Plus, when we do wanna go somewhere we can get 4 people, full fuel and luggage no problem.

I`d think the belts are better. Most use 2 belts .P/S can afford to be missing but the other runs everything else .And on most motors it`s not that much of a pain to change.
Yep, I used to fly the Yak-52 till some trees got in the way

Re: 90' mercruiser 5.7 serpentine setup???

My friend who owned it was in the front and i was rear. No memory after engine was started at the tie down pins. We suspect a major engine malfunction or a broken propeller blade on take off.We both lived but john got the worst of it.About 1000 agl we went -6 and down to +9 on impact.speed about 110 , 85 deg. down bubble.
Still havent won the lottery yet ,I know I`ve got to be the luckiest guy alive.

Yes, you're lucky to be alive...and no post crash fire? Amazing! I figured you had either baled or were in the second seat.

Do you still fly at all?

I've had a few interesting flights myself...but nothing like that!

Remember that the circulating pump turns the other way with a serp belt, gotta replace it.

Yeah, I think I have OCD or something...I tend to avoid reusing anything unless it's pretty much brand new. So replacing the pump is a given since the engine is being replaced anyway.:D

Re: 90' mercruiser 5.7 serpentine setup???

I think the way you route the serpentine belt in an automotive application is what requires a reverse flow water pump. I ran a regular flow Edelbrock on a Vortec 355 with March Performance serpentine pulleys...but when I had the GM performance serpentine setup I had to run a reverse flow pump...

Looks like the marine application is the same.

Thanks for the part number lookup, imported_John_S!!

How come every time you go to a party everyone always ends up knowing who the pilot is???

I don't know...

But, the "qualities" that you might consider annoying on a forum are the same qualities that might save your behind if you ever have the misfortune to be in an airplane in distress...
