Hi there, since some time I am owning a phantom 21 sprots boat lacking the outboard. NOw I got the opportunity to get a reasonably priced 200HP Suzuki outboard. As this size engines are rather hard to find in Eurpe, I wonder if anyone in here could give me advice whether this seems to be an adequate combination and what experience you have with the big Suzi 2Strokes.
Greetings. '90 SUZUKI 2Stroke any good?

phantom 21
That is regarded as a high performance boat I belive?

If so a 200 hp will be no problem. On Internet You can see Phantom 21 with 240 hp outboard.

200HP Suzuki outboard.

Suzuki DT200 then, Year 1990.

As this size engines are rather hard to find in Eurpe,

Maybe that is the case, one negative thing then is second hand spare parts if needed. You may need to buy new spare parts if some expensive part will break.

I wonder if anyone in here could give me advice whether this seems to be an adequate combination

I guess it depends also how fast You want your boat to go. Probably 35-40 knots (or more) I would guess with a Suzuki DT200.
40 knots is very fast in my opinion. I have myself a 19' DC/Bowrider that is capable of 40 knots (with a Yamaha F115 4-stroke). I cruise most of the time in about 25 knots. But sometimes it feels great to just move to full throttle and have the boat almost fly on the water up to 40 knots.

and what experience you have with the big Suzi 2Strokes.

I have no experince with a DT200 but I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before that was fine in my opinion.
If You know it is has been serviced regulary I guess a DT200 can can be a fine outboard in many years in the future, if You also continue to do regular service.

As far as I know the DT200, like my DT65, have for example:
- IC Ignition system
- Oil Injection system
- Electric Trim and Tilt
- NA12S remote control box
- Instrumentation: RPM, Varningsystem including oil-level, Trimindicator,(Speedometer)

Your DT200 is a V6, has 6 carburators... (many to rebuild if needed).
Probably stainless steel propeller is standard.

Books:
There should be an orginal Suzuki Users Guide that came with the outbord when it was new. You can also buy a Shop manual for this outboard, rather expensive. Less expensive is a Seloc or Clymer manual You can buy for example on http://www.amazon.co.uk
http://www.amazon.de

/Bo

I have an '89 200 and here's my experience:

Very reliable but parts prices are rediculous.

Take special care of the lower unit as these usually break before the powerhead does. Frequent fluid changes never hurt. These are also harder to find used. If you run in salt water I would thoroughly clean the lower once a year because salt can build up on the inside and weaken and crack the housing.

It's not going to be as fast as a Mercury 200 because of the high RPM limitations. Rev-limiter will kick in around 6K. However these motors are very torquey and you can run high pitch props with them. I run between a 26 and 30 pitch prop and I get around 80mph with a 30inch Mercury ChopperII. Mercury props will fit fine if you double stack the thrust washers.
Don't forget your gas card because your gonna need it. At full throttle it drinks gas almost as fast pouring it out on the ground. The motor has 3 2barrel Mikuni carbs and 2 fuel pumps. If it's been sitting a while I'd clean them out-- the carb kits are $40 or $50 a piece. I run an electric fuel pump set at 4 psi through the manual pumps.
The third water pickup above the prop should be blocked off. If you run high transom heights then you will probably need a low water pickup. A water pressure guage is a must. There is a hole tapped on the left cylinder bank for this but the barb fitting is metric and I had to order this from Suzuki. I weighed it and by weight cocaine was slightly cheaper.
The oil injection is supposed to be good but if you run it, I'd replace all the lines with new ones. I disabled mine to not have to worry about it.
The models with the dual plugs heads are better.

Do compression check before buying. If it has more than 100 psi and none are +- 5 psi from the others then you are in good shape.

If you want a manual for reference or to work on it, I HIGHLY recommend getting the factory manual. It will cost 3 times more but it is 10 times more accuarate and useful.

If the motor was here, between $1000 and $1500 would be a fair price.

Good luck

Thanks a lot SorryDog. Great information. Only one thing makes me wonder: you name 1.5k$ as a fair price. Oh man, that guy here in Good Old Germany is asking for roughly $3600, leading me to two questions: where do you get these engines used in US and how can I get it shipped.
Maybe I need to post another topic, like shipping to Europe.
