just spent $1700 to have this puppy rebuilt, and now am dealing with another prob: Fires right up, but runs rough for a few seconds, coughs once and belches a blue cloud, then revs into hyperspace. Do you think some Beano might help???

Could this be a fuel line prob? And what the hell is VRO, and do I have it?? (penicillin?)
Thanks,
baggywinkles, aka jimmy

How high is hyperspace these days?If you have the warm up lever raised when you start, lower it a tad,and try to keep running pushing the key in.(and out)
If still in hyperspace it is not a fuel problem if only after a few seconds of running.
My term of hyperspace is 5000 RPM unloaded.

DHP

The 1990 120hp has QUICKSART on it so you should be starting it with the throttle closed. The system should allow the motor to warm up about 1100 rpm, then settle down to a normal idle speed.

Are you starting the motor with the fast idle in the up position, or is the motor revving up on its own?

Re: '90 V4 120hp

Guess I'm not quite into hyperspace then at 4500 rpm. I'll try the "key in-and-out" thing and check the warm up lever (don't know what or where it is, though), and see if it helps.

The motor was revving on it's own. Here's some background: bought B/M/T in April.

Had bad wrist pin bearing, so had engine overhauled. The marina ran it for three hours non-stop after that to check things out. Ran fine. Motor sat until September when I cranked it up. Ran rough, lots of blue smoke, but fired right up. Idled around 1100. Never settled down below that.

Sat until yesterday, fired right up but ran extremely rough, then about every ten seconds revving to 4500 on it's own (I had throttle open just a tad), coughing once and letting out a big cloud of blue smoke then dropping in rpm to around 11-1500.

Any ideas? I am thinking of replacint the fuel lines today. I checked the filters and they are clean. One possibility I haven't considered until reading a post here is condensation in the tank. The marina drained the tank and the boat sat in the muggy Florida climate for several months. If that is the problem, how do I fix it?

Thanks folks,
baggy

P.S.

Can anyone recommend a really good OMC/Evinrude Mechanic in the Port Charlotte, Fl area? Between Venice and Fort Myers?

Have a dealer check on some older service bulletins on that engine. There was something about venting the lower main bearing cavity as it would accumulate the dripped oil then suck it up to the #4 cylinder and make the motor belch blue smoke and run rough at idle.

Re: '90 V4 120hp

I was wondering what that loose hose with the check valve in it was for. It ties into the P-hole vent. Seems to be working, but the two spark plugs on the left (looking at the motor from behind) are much dirtier than the two on the right. Is one of them #4?

Re: '90 V4 120hp

Just replaced the fuel line and bulb...still coughing and belching smoke.

Could this be something in the carburetor sticking and flooding the engine? Won't a rich oil/gas mixture like on these 2-cyclers gum up the float if they site for long periods? I seem to remember something about "varnish" in the jets or on the float. If so, can I do anything about it myself with my very limited knowledge? I'm not much of a mechanic, but willing to try. Boat is breaking me!~

I've tried several other things suggested here but without any luck. Any sound advice from an expert is appreciated.

baggy

Baggy, do you have a service manual?? Might want to test the recirculation valves on that engine.

Baggy, if the dealer who rebuilt it cannot help contact Jim Smith at J&C Marine in Punta Gorda, 639-3725. If you cant get thru call his cell at 628-1923.

If the motor was just rebuilt and has done this from the start, there may be an intake bolt or two out and its sucking air. (Assuming the ignition is correct) It happens.

Re: '90 V4 120hp

What you really need first off, is an owners manual. That will tell you about fuel, and oil, priming to start, warm up lever, etc. You may want to be a lttle more knowlegable about thuis engine before attempting any repairs, or adjustments. I would have thought that $1700 repair bill would have included some information on care, and feeding.

Thank you all for the info. I've got plenty to go with now. I'll post later to let yopu know how things went, and what the problem really was.
baggy

Re: '90 V4 120hp

Just an update to those who responded to my problem: carburetors were gunked up! motor sat for months without being drained - my fault. Varnish was sticking this up and causing rough running, poor idling and lots of smoke. Cost of repair: $265.00 OUCH! BOAT = bring on another thousand.

Thanks for all the advice.
Baggywinkles
