Hello Sporthog
The best thing would be to find out whats wrong with your motor. What caused the compression problem? etc. Then decide if you need a new one. Of course if you want a new motor any way, don't let me stand in your way.

If it was me and the motor is as shot as it sounds I would consider up grading to as new a motor as possible maybe a few more bells and whistles A few more horses ,latest technology.
Its a perfect time for a major upgrade.
Turn that mess into a great oportunity
Spike

Tear it down and see what's wrong. You may be surprised in a good way.

I agree with Beerbatter, could be as simple as a bad headgasket. If you have the means for a new motor a new 4 stroke would probably pay for itself in fuel savings over the long run. At the least, you will have some saleable parts from your Evinrude.

Before you write it off, do a serious decarb. Pull plugs and spray in cylinders as well. You never know, you could get lucky.....

If you aren't somewhat experienced and have time on your hands, overhaul can be a big undertaking. If you don't value the experience, best to part it out......

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT'S GONNA NEED AN OVERHAUL. I KNEW THAT REPAIR WORK WAS HIGH BUT I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. THE COST FOR THE OVERHAUL IS GONNA COST ME AROUND 1500 TO 2500. IS THIS A FAIR MARKET PRICE? I'M JUST LOOKING AT ALL THE POSSIBLITIES. THE MOTOR IS STILL RUNNING BUT NOT GOOD. DOES THIS MEAN THAT MAYBE IT'S ONLY A RING OR GASKET ON ONE OR TWO CYLINDER'S. WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO JUST REPAIR THE ONE THAT'S NOT WORKING OR WOULD IT PAY JUST TO REPAIR ALL?

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

If the problem is a piston/cylinder thing, you will be in there deep and may as well freshen the thing up. If a headgasket, that is simple head gasket swapping.

If they are telling you the truth it sounds like major overhaul and you would have a rebuilt motor when done.

Otherwise, how much $$$ do you have and how bad do you want a new motor? Or, you could take your chances on getting some other motor.

What kind of warranty does that money buy??????
I would follow Schematic's advice first then look around (if necessary) and ask lots of warranty questions.

Bob

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

HELLO BOB_VT,

THEY ARE GIVEN ME 90 DAY WARRANTY ON OVERHAUL. I CONTACTED A GUY THAT HAS A 115HP EVINRUDE THAT HAS TWO OUTBOARD/MARINE SHOPS. IT'S A LATE 80'S MODEL AND HE WOULD TRADE OUT AND WARRANTY FOR ONLY 30 DAYS. IF YOU WERE IN THE BUSINESS LONG ENOUGH YOU THINK HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN THE YEAR MODEL. HE IS ASKING 1500.OO FOR AND TRADE MOTORS WITH HIM PUTTING 115HP ON MY BOAT. THIS SEAMS TO BE A MAJOR DECISION FOR ME. WHO TO TRUST WHO NOT TOO. I'M THINKING UPGRADE MOTOR LIKE A '92- '97. MAYBE JUST TRADE IN AND GET UPGRADE ON BOAT AS WELL. SO FOR I'M OUT 20 BUCKS AND WORRY ON THIS WHOLE THING. JUST TO THINK I'M MISSING SOME PRIME FISHING IN THIS AREA. THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO. IS THERE A WEB SITE THAT HAS LATER MODEL MOTORS AND IF SO WHAT IS THE ADDRESS?

Hi sporthog2,
I agree with schematic as a first step. If you are going to go the rebuild route I would think about a rebuilt power head from Golden Precision Marine @ 1-417-725-5746. they offer a 1 year warranty and I believe thier prices are well within the prices that you were quoted. I have used thier powerheads twice and have been very pleased. No I don't have stock in the company, just passing on infoprmation.

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

How handy are you with a repair manual? I have done many rebuilds on car and motorcycle motors and they all have gone well. If you want to tackle it yourself you can do it all in a few evenings. I have a tool rental place here and they had all the tools I was missing to finish it. As long as your cylindars are not scored you can just put a new cross hatch and put new pistons and rings in. I have made an electric motor with a rubber mount fitting to hook up to the motor so I can get the rings to seat before I reassemble everything. It helps to see in the cross hatch where the rings are hitting. I once found out I have a cylinder that was out of round. Anyways this has been a hobby of mine and I get a kick out of seeing it run when Im done. You dont have to spend all the dollars on a full rebuild either, I have replaced just the bad pistons or rings.

I have to agree with the Beer man. I would buy a manual and maybe find a friend that has a good back ground with this sort of thing, buy a few beer, maybe a steak for the grill and give it a go. What are you out. Like some of the guys are saying, it could be something alot simpler than the shop is telling you. You can get allot of help here on the board if you run into something that you have a question on. Remember, a guy just like you is who you are paying big bucks to have it fixed. And if you do it buy the book, and you will because it is your motor, it will be done right.

Stalker170

STEAKS ON THE HOUSE GUYS,

SOUNDS AS THOUGH I'VE GOT A MANUEL AT MY FIGURE TIPS. YOU GUYS ARE VERY HELPFUL INDEED. THANKS FOR THE IDEAS! IT'S A GO WITH A FRIEND OF MINE. IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE AN EXPERIENCE. BUT WE ARE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. JUST GOT A FEW QUESTION'S FIRST.
1. HOW ARE THE CYLINDERS LINE UP? 1&3 ON THE LEFT AND 2&4 ON THE RIGHT . THATS STANDING AT BACK OF BOAT LOOKING TO THE FRONT.
2. I WOULD LIKE TO RUN A COMPRESSION CHECK ON THIS FIRST. WHAT TYPE AND WHERE COULD I GET A GAUGE? AUTO OR MARINE PARTS STORE OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
3. WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR FIRST ONCE I REMOVE CYLINDER COVER?
4. SHOULD I TRY REPAIRING ONE CYLINDER OR PISTON OR ALL FOUR?
5. WHAT KIND OF COST AM I LOOKING AT OVERHAULING ONE CYLINDER VS ALL FOUR?
6. HOW GOOD IS THE 90HP EVINRUDE AND HOW LONG SHOULD THEY LAST? IS IT OVER FOR THIS ONE?
LIKE I SAID THIS IS GONNA BE SOME EXPERIENCE. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS
ANY SUGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

Sporthog2,

The cheapest thing to do is remove the cyl. head that has the two bad comp. readings. If the cylinders are not scored, you may just have stuck rings like Schematic mentioned. If they are scored, you might as well have it bored and re ring all four. Along with bearings, seals, gaskets, etc. I would also rebuild the carbs. that may be the reason they scored to begin with.

Or, you just might be lucky and all you did was pop a head gasket.

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

Slow down,, you are stressing too much..

Have you done what Schematic suggested??

If you haven't yet tried a decarb.. then you may be wasting money.. if you get rings stuck in with carbon, your comression can drop right down. so do that first, soak that stuff in the bores and see if it improves your compression. (yes a screw in guage can be gotten from a auto type place, I just got one myself.)

As for the prices, use www.google.com to search for places that sell stuff like that, (heaps of them) and then go there and check the prices, they vary dramatically.)

but DON'T do anything till you have found out whats wrong with it now.. you could be tossing good money after bad unncesssarily.

regards

Frank

Sporthog2,

Yes, you can try soaking the two bad cyl's for a while to see if that improves compression. The only thing I'm afraid of is that if there IS scoring, you'll only make it worse by turning the engine over more.

Costs? Rough estimates.

1. Head gasket=$30.00
2. Complete rebuild parts (pistons, etc)= $800.00.
3. Machining=$2-300.00.
4. Carb kits=$35.00
5. Water pump kit=$50.00

I wouldn't put used plugs in a new rebuild. Make sure you are using the correct heat range. I believe your engine uses L77J4.

If the engine looks good and the lower unit is in good shape, dropping a grand into this is a lot cheaper than buying a used engine you know NOTHING about.

I'm still hoping you just popped a head gasket. Not entirely uncommon on crossflow V-4's.
