Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

Hello again Dea Hog2,
All the information that has been posted here is good stuff to follow especially since you have a manual. Just wanted to reply to a couple of your questions. Standing at the back of the boat and looking forward the #1&#3 cylenders are on the right hand side and #2&#4 are on the left. number one cylinder is the higest cylinder.
Most rebuilds a person can estimate approx $200 per cylinder as all of the bearings are needle type they are usually re-useable.
There is a local machine shop that I use for boreing they get $45 per hole.
If you are going to do a complete rebuild definatly re-build the water pump and carbs you wouldn't want to ruin a good re-build by over looking these two simple things.
Lots of luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

You guys are something else. All the help I need. I am still wondering what is a total decarb. Soaking in a solvent( what kind ) putting a carb kit on each carb( whats all in a carb kit ). I'm just full of questions because I see no need in making a mistake when someone else has already gone through the same thing. This is gonna be a good experience because momma don't buy my tires for me anymore. If you know what I mean. My dad would never try something like this but I try to teach my children there is nothing thats not reachable if they set their mind to it. Teach what you preach, not do as I say but do as I do. Follow me and I will lead the way. I thank you guys more than you'll ever know. You not only helped me but your helping the next generation as well. Thanks again...

sporthog2,

A couple things. You can buy decarb. in spray cans from any John/Rude dealer.

A carb rebuild is really quite simple. The only things in the kit are: gaskets, a needle and seat and some seals. Follow the book, take your time and you'll do a great job. Ditto for the water pump.

By the way, it's a lot easier to unhook the shift linkage for your water pump job while the carbs are off.

WELL IT LOOKS BAD FOR #4 PISTON AND BLOCK. PISTON IS BEAT TO DEATH BUT THE CYLINDER HOLE IS NOT BAD. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH WE CAN SALVAGE THE BLOCK. SHOULD I TAKE A CHANCE ON REBORING #4 ONLY OR REBORE ALL? I KNOW I'LL NEED TO BUY 1 PISTON. OTHERS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE. SHOULD THEY ALL STAY THE SAME SIZE OR IS IT GONNA BE OKAY TO JUST DO 1 HOLE? HOW ABOUT CHECKING THIS VRO OILING SYTEMS, IS THEIR A WAY TO CHECK IF IT'S WORKING? WE'RE DOWN TO THE CORE OF THINGS NOW. CARB'S ARE OFF AND INSIDE OF PISTON SEAMS TO BE OKAY. THE BLOCK SEAMS TO BE IN WORKING ORDER. IT APPEARS TO HAVE LOST ITS RINGS ON THE PISTON.

Sporthog2,

You'll be OK just replacing one piston and cleaning up the the other three cylinders.

Of course you'll have to re-ring all four.

Oil injection. The best way to tell if it works is to use pre-mix in the fuel and watch the level of the oil tank after you have run a while. I just fill them to a point and mark a line with a Sharpee pen. It will be smoky but better that than rebuilding it all over again.

I doubt your oil injection was the problem. That would take out more than one. You probably broke a ring due to carbon buildup.

UPDATING WORK PROGRESS. THE CYLINDER HOLE HAS SOME SCORING. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS I'VE HONED ALL HOLES AND THAT ONE CYLINDER HAS TWO PLACES ABOUT 3/16 OF AN INCH WIDE AND 3/4 OF AN INCH LONG AND APPROXIMATLEY LESS THAN 1/32 DEEP. I BELEIVE I CAN GET THIS OUT BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS WOULD CHANGE A RING SIZE FOR THIS HOLE? IT'S NOT VERY DEEP BUT YOU CAN FEEL THIS IMPERFECTION. HOW DO THE RINGS COME IN SIZE? ALL THE SHOPS AROUND HERE SEND EVERYTHING OFF TO GET REBORED. NOBODY SEAMS TO KNOW IF THIS WILL RUN WITH GOOD COMPRESSION LIKE IT IS. NEED SOME ADVICE ON THIS MATTER.

Sporthog2,

You have to clean that cyl. up completely. If it were mine I would bore all four 0.10 over and re ring with new pistons. You'll still be money ahead.

One more thing Sporthog,
If you don't follow djhons advice and bore all 3 at least have that one bored oversized (check and see what over sized pistons are avaible)by trying to hone it all out will most usually make the cylinder out of round. Talking from experance.
I think from what you have said so far you're doing good.

UPDATE ON PROGRESS,
PRICES ARE AS FOLLOWS
CARB KIT'S 2- 20.00
WATER PUMP- 46.00
GASKET KIT- 27.75
CENTER MAIN BEARING- 60.00
PISTONS 4- 400.00
REBORED 0.10 X 4- 200.00

TOTAL- 753.00

DOES THIS LOOK RIGHT AS PRICES GO FOR THIS PROJECT? IS THEIR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND? I'M NOT CONVINCED YET THAT I CAN'T GET THIS TO RUN WITHOUT REBORE. HARD HEADED I GUESS. I'M STILL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE THAT'S TRIED THIS BEFORE AND IT WORKED. THE SCORING IS REDUCED A GREAT DEAL FROM FIRST LOOK. IT WAS RUNNING BEFORE WITH BAD PISTON AND STUCK RINGS ON ALL PISTONS. IT JUST LOOKS TO ME THIS WOULD RUN RIGHT NOW FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS AS IS. CALL ME A TIGHT WAD BUT I'M JUST TRYING TO CUT COST.

Re: 90HP EVINRUDE GONE BAD

Yes I have done this before with my Merc. It ran great untill I got some water in my fuel without a seperator. It ended up pitting the bearings and eventually burning a rod bearing up. I am currently doing the same to my 86 110 Evinrude. I was lucky to aquire a parts motor. All I have purchased is a gasket kit, crank seal kit and new rings std. size. Total $150 spent so far. I hope to find the time to finish cleaing the bearings and pistons soon and putting back together. My failure happened when my oil line broke at the motor from tilting up and down. I was thinking of bypassing the oil pump but still not sure. I definitely need to check my alarm system if I leave her in.

UPDATE ON CYLINDER HONING;
I'VE HONED ALL SCORING OUT OF HOLE AND IT LOOKS GOOD. A FREIND IN OKLAHOMA TOLD ME TO PLACE PISTONS BACK IN THEIR HOLES AND MEASURE WITH FEELER GAUGE THE AMOUNT OF SLACK IN CYLINDER WEAR. #1 .013, #2 .014, #3 .014, #4 .014. COME TO FIND OUT THE #3 CYLINDER IS THE ONE MESSED UP AND #4 HAS NO PROBLEM. SOME MACHANIC THIS MARINE SHOP HAS. THIS IS A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR MY SON,FREIND AND I FOR WHICH THIS IS A BIG UNDERTAKING. FROM THE SIZE OF THE CYLINDERS WALLS THIS SHOULD BE JUST FINE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS BOATS LIFE TIME OR UNTILL I TRADE IN. I'M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAUSED ALL OF THIS. OVERHEAT(BAD WATER PUMP), OIL INJECTION(BAD OIL PUMP), OR CARBON BUILD-UP(RUNNING TO RICH) OR JUST A COMBINATION OF ALL OF THESE. THERE'S ALOT OF CARBON BUILD-UP AND RESIN RESIDUE ON JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYMORE SUGGESTION'S ON ANYTHING BEFORE I PUT THIS BACK TOGETHER?
