90hp Evinrude Tach Question

I started my engine the other day and looked at the tach to see how fast it was turning. I noticed the tach wasn’t working so I did what any good mechanic would do I taped it with my finger and the needle brakes off. So off to my favorite shopping mall EBay and sure enough I find an assortment of OMC Tachs (most of which are multi function types with idiot lights in them and I’m guessing these won’t work on a motor as old as mine). I did find one tach that I think will work (please follow link)

Can anyone confirm weather or not this Tach will work on a 1988 90Hp Evindure Outboard? Thanks

If it is in good shape it will work, but it is getting close to the point where you should be checking with your local dealer on price. If you already have a good three point harness, I think she will want to sell you a brand new guage, with no shipping charge....

Hay thanks for the tip ezeke. So after looking around some more I've got another question. How do I know how many Pulses my alternator puts out?

Most of OMC motors need to be set for 6P. The Teleflex tachometer instruction manual has a table with the correct settings:

Thanks again ezeke I think you just saved me some money. I have a Quicksilver Tach laying around from my last boat. It has a 12 Pole setting so I think it will work. I hope it’s not bad joo joo to use a Mercury Tach on an Evinrude.

I pulled the old Tach and I’m trying to figure out what each wire does. It looks to me like
The purple wire is 12v
The black wire is ground
The gray wire the pulse (connects to the Tach Sender post)
Am I correct? ? ? ?
