90HP ok on a 1976 SS? Also transom question.

I’m back after a 9 year hiatus. Sold my 1977 Holiday i fully restored after i bought my first home in 2012. Wish i hadn’t.

picked up a 1976 SS for $850 in January! Sold the 1967 Johnson on it for $200 last week. I plan another full restoration with NEW or like new outboard.

the tag rates the boat at 85 hp. The Johnson was an 80hp. Would i be ok with a 90hp etec on the back? My guess is the 90 evinrude etec at 320lbs is still way lighter than the 1967 Johnson Super Seahorse electramatic.

also, many here including myself have glued or epoxy’d sheets of ply together to form the new transoms on our restorations. I had a 1968 Jupiter for a short time and it’s original transom was solid wood. If i can find someone to plane a piece of oak for me at just the appropriate thickness, wouldn’t that be stronger than sandwiched sheets of ply?

Nope ,a bad guess----- the E-tec is in fact heavier than the 67 Seahorse.----The 80 seahorse is at 240 lbs in the factory brochure.----The E-tec is propshaft horsepower too.

And nope, the natural lumber transom you found in a boat, wasnt factory, and a 1.5in laminated plywood transom would be stronger. Hence the prevalence of LVL, glueLam and I-joist beams, headers and floor systems in home construction

It also minimizes expansion and contraction of your transom, which reduces the likelyhood or whatever you seal the transom w cracking and exposing the wood to moisture.....

The old 80 you sold, in perfect factory condition, was closer to 65-70hp at the prop, a bigger gap then the 80 vs 90hp suggests.

Overpowering, regardless of all else and no matter how you operate the throttle, is a violation in some states. Know the regs were you boat.

Welcome back! Looking forward to the restoration. I just finished up my '78 16SS after previously completing a '72 15ft Nova. I'll be keeping my eye out for a steal on a 18'+ center console/Mariner/MR for my next project...just don't tell the admiral.

Insuring it and registering it with over rated HP can be an issue depending on state is what I know. As well as a no go on the legality side.

A light powerful 3 cyl 70 - 75 HP is best suited for the ever popular 16 SS.
