The serial plate has been rubbed off a new to me Merc 90 with "oil injection" printed on the shroud, I am thinking its a mid 90's but I am not certain.
I put up some pics including a serial from the lower end which has part of it rubbed off and doesnt seem to come up in a search.
I would like to get a manual for it but I am unsure of the year?
Its mounted on a 28' toon barge.
When I put it in reverse the motor would clunk and jar as if the prop struck something but it would go in reverse and I just kept the RPM down.
Towards the end of the season it did not want to go in reverse, it would be making a ticking sound for sometimes up to a minute before it would engage in reverse and the clunking and jarring was still present.
I pulled the lower unit and took it home to work on over the winter.
I have never taken apart a lower unit and appreciate any advice.
Looking forward to any feedback here.
Cheers,
Jon

Maybe it just needs to be installed correctly.-----Put lower unit in neutral.----Put control in neutral.-----Adjust cable ( If needed ) to put slider in mid travel.------Did it all line up ??-----I doubt there is anything wrong in the lower unit , but if you let it rub / rattle for up to a minute who knows !----Your location ?

Yep that could be it indeed, the control is wonky on it.
I will put it in the vice and see what it does manually...

Thanks for the offer but I do my own work.
The cottage is near Coldwater Ontario.
Any input on what this girl is called or a possible serial number range for her?
Its a 3 cylinder, 3 carbed, oil injected 90 with power trim.
Cheers,
Jon

I am thinking it looks more like this 94 ELPTO?
It has the oil tank in the same place and the shroud on the lower unit also looks the same.
Were these motors any good?
Anything to watch out for on them?
Cheers,
Jon

Jon just adjust the cables or replace. Very typically that, from what you describe. All else being well. Look like a late 80’s to early 90’s model. Blank off the oil injection and pre mix...if you’re fussy too.
