91' 120 L-Drive - Issues shifting into forward after impeller change......

Hello all

I've had the boat out twice since changing my water impeller 2 wks ago and now I'm having problems shifting into forward on a consistent basis. However, reverse works fine.

Meaning, in one instance I can start the boat and shift into forward with no problem. In another instance I can start the boat and when I put the throttle in the the forward gear position I stay in neutral (motor revs but no shot). In the second instance, It will eventually shift into gear after I shift it from nuetral to forward a few times.

Have I made it clear as mud?

Possible the shift lever is for some reason shifting to fast idle instead of into gear.
When you use the fast idle option how is your lever set up for this option??
Do you pull it out or is there a button on the lever??

Did everything snug up tight upon reassembly? The up down motion of the shifting rod might be lacking enough down motion due to a gap of some kind.

I pull the shift lever out and forward.

Everthing "looked and felt" snug. I've looked over the seal and bolts where the mid-leg connects to the lower unit several times.

I guess the only thing to do is to remove the LU, reassemble, and check the mid-leg / LU connection to see if it looks any different.

Thanks

Could it be something with my shift linkage?

Not familiar w/L drive. Disconnect the linkage and try shifting by hand. That will tell you which direction to go for fix.

Shifter to cable, cable to linkages/?where adjustments are made, Somewhere towards the end there is an attachment to the shifting rod. Disconnect there and see if you can shift into forward/neutral/reverse by hand. If yes then then adjustment in the linkages is needed, if no then there is a problem in the gears and that is a real problem w/a l drive and beyond me.

In which direction does the shift rod move when going into reverse (up or down)?

On the outboard, Up while slowly turning the prop is reverse. Should be similar on the l drive
