I am about to replace my water pump becuase of a weak tell tale. I'm pretty sure I can tackle this without much problem but I was hoping I could get some info on cleaning out the flow path of the water through the powerhead, etc. Is it safe to blow air through? Should I remove the thermostat before blowing air through? Any info is appreciated. I also thought it was weird that I couldn;t find a replacement thermostat on this site. In any case, thanks in advance.

From memory, I believe it's a E60ELEIB. It's not a tiller, and has electric start, manual tilt, and its a VRO.

Thanks for the fiche. I was really more concerned with how to clean out the water flow path though. I can replace the thermostat whenever because I believe it is good.

You can force either air or water up the pump outlet tube to clear the water passages. Removing the stats might help also when you first do this.

OK, thanks for the reply. I was thinking along the right lines but didn't want to do it if I was going to damage anything.

Re: 91 60hp johnson water pump replacement

Ok, here's the deal. The outboard was getting hot and the tell tale was getting weak on my last outing. It also was spraying steam from the tell tale. I pulled the water pump off yesterday and it looked perfectly fine. I replaced it anyway. I blew air through the system and it did not seem restricted. I am kinda of stumped since I expected to notice something being wrong when I took this thing apart. My only thought is that it could be the thermostat is stuck closed. Any thoughts?

Here are some of the possibilities, assuming the water passages are clear and stats are working correctly:

a) pump not assembled correctly
b) you missed the pump outlet with the water tube
c) the grommet in the pump outlet got folded over during final assembly
d) incorrect parts used
e) pump body not well sealed to wear plate
f) pump housing or wear plate scored (if complete kit not installed)
g) pump air bleed hole plugged
h) water not deep enough for the pump to do its thing
i) debris stuck in water passages
j) stuck thermostat or vernitherm
k) key missing or incorrect
l) you went cheap and installed only an impeller, rather than a complete OEM kit
m) diverters missing or incorrectly installed
n) pump rotates clockwise looking from the top

The vanes make no difference ... if you install them incorrectly oriented, they will flip to the correct position upon rotation.

I haven't fully assembled yet. I just did not notice anything out of ordinary with the old pump. I am still trying to figure out where the 2 O-rings go that come with the kit. I did get the entire Sierra rebuild kit with the housing. I am not sure what you mean by diverters.

To see what parts are needed and where they go, look at the parts list on the BRP Evinrude website. If you had gotten the BRP kit, you would not typically get any unneeded parts. Diverters are under the cylinder head and made from 3/8" hose. They sometimes swell up or get crap packed around them.

Have you blown the water passages clear?

I have blown them clear. Thanks for the website I found what I needed. Come to think of it, I haven't checked the diverter because I disconnected it at the powerhead when I was blowing air through it. I will check that next.

Diverters are under the cylinder head (i.e. inside where they can't be seen with the head in place).

Ok, I have everything back in place and am attempting to hook the shift linkage back up. I can't figure out how this thing goes back in place. I know that I pushed the elbow in to get it disconnencted but I have a horrible view of the connection underneath. Any tips?
