'91 Evinrude 90hp Should I disconnect the VRO?

We are having a used motor installed on our boat. The motor is a 1991 Evinrude, 90hp. The shop that is installing it says they like to disconnect the VRO on these motors because they have had issues with them. Is that true of the 1991 models or did they have the bugs worked out by then?

I've read that you can upgrade them? Does that just involve replacing the existing pump with a newer one? Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Brent

The pump on your motor is a VRO2, which was a good pump. The fail-safe is to premix with a pump that old and then keep using the pump until/unless it fails. If you upgrade, it will be to the newer OMS system which will not have the wide variation in fuel to oil ratios.

Good information and reading will be found here:

BTW, I have VRO2 pumps on my 1988 140HP and 1990 200HP motors. I switched both pumps to premix many years ago with the idea of upgrading when they failed. They are still very much alive and well.

new system is 350 +- for the part. go to premix. i have on all of mine. it is just a matter of unplugging 2 plugs, cutting and plugging the oil line, and removing the oil tank. then premix gas.

Re: '91 Evinrude 90hp Should I disconnect the VRO?

I happen to be considering the same thing. I have a 60hp VRO that does well. I bought it with my boat last year. The boat is a 1990 and the VRO is an 89 I beleive. I have not had any problems with it. I also have a 9.9 kicker that is Johnson. My main reason for disconnecting the VRO would be to get rid of the smaller tank of premix for the 9.9. It takes up space and is a pain to get in and out of the small space I have for it. It does not appear to be too difficult to disconnect. My only concern is that I do not have an owners maunal for my boat and I am unsure of the size of my fuel tank. I am unable to measure it to get its volume. I am looking for information on a 1990 Smokercraft Fazer 17 foot. If you know the size of the fuel tank that was originally installed, please let me know. My other question was, should the oil tank already contain the right ratio and all I need to do is add that to a full tank of gas. It seems to me that when I have a half tank of gas, I also have a half tank of oil. Are they supposed to coincide with each other? Will I get the right mix if I top both off then, put the oil from the tank into the gas tank? Any info would be great. Both tanks are original equipment. The oil tank holds:confused: about 1.7 or 1.8 gallons of oil. I am unsure of how much the gas tank holds. I never let it get down past 1/4 tank.

using the vro2 the tanks are not related, as to the use or quanity. they just made all the oil tanks, 1.8 gallons. the gas and oil are presently mixed at the pump. but if you disable the vro pump, you will have to put oil into the fuel tank. contact smokercraft and see if you can find out the size fuel tank you have. also start your own thread.
