91 glastron 4.3 mercruiser engine installation trouble

I have a 91 Glastron 4.3 mercruiser engine I pulled out and overhauled. The motor mount height was untouched. Is it possible to reinstall the engine without pulling the sterndrive out..... I tried some force and turning the crank and it still has a 1 1/4" to go. (Is there any shortcuts or tricks to get the engine couplier and the drive shaft to go together.) Do I have to pull the stern drive ?

Mark, How were you able to get the motor out of the boat, without pulling the outdrive? Does it slide that far forward? I needed to lift my 4.3LX straight up to clear the front motor mount studs. It has got to be easier to pull the drive then try to turn the motor to synch with the outdrive, while pushing it back.

You will have to pull the drive anyway. Once installed, the motor/gimble bearing/outdrive has to be centered using the alignment tool, and motor mounts adjusted accordingly.. This is something you just can't skip any steps.

With a 1991 Glaston you are able to remove the dog house walls and easily move the engine forward a foot , before the oil pan starts to touch.

save yourself the trouble of pulling the motor twice to replace the coupler.
.remove the drive, install the motor back on the mounts,check/correct any alignment issues, install drive .
