91 Johnson 90 horse carb question

We were just foggin and cleaning up the motor on my boat when we noticed that a part was cracked and spitting fuel. Im no mechanic but I will try and explain where this part is, if you are looking from the prop side of the motor it is on the top right side of the carbs, it is a red plastic "flipper" and on top it has an air valve. The red flipper part is broken. It looks to me like you just unscrew the four screws to left and then replace the flipper, but I dont want to go tearing into it without a little knowledge. thanks for the help.<br />Jamie

That's you primer solenoid manual valve. Very common for them to crack in that manner, and any dealer should carry it. Right too about loosening the 4 screws, and the valve pulls out the end. Be careful reassembling that you align the slot on the valve with the pin on the solenoid.

Make note of the direction the red pointer is facing now. If its turned 90 degrees after assembly it will essentially be priming all the time. It becomess a manual choke should the electric part fail. Just make sure its pointed the same way it is now after the repair and you will be OK.

Well we kinda of turned it already while messing with it so we are not sure which way it was original, we have not disassembled it yet however, it there a direction it should be pointing. <br />Jamie

It should be pointing to the rear,normally.

I see in the manual it shows to point it towards the Carbs for normal operation, I guess this is what you mean by the rear.<br /> Thanks <br />Jamie

The knob should be fully clockwise, you should feel a slight detent turning in this direction only.

That valve(unsrew the cap) also is where you should be fogging it AND running engine tuner/cleaner/De-carbonizer thru while running.Do it with a warm engine then run it hard to blow out the carbon and goo that kills your rings.<br /> TM
