My boat has sat in the backyard for about three years, unused. We decided we wanted to get it back on the water this year. I knew I needed carpet and seats, but didn't expect to find a rotted spot in the floor.

I have never been afraid to tackle a project around the house, but this makes me nervous!

This first pic is of the area, that was rotted, after I tore into it a little. Just to the right of that, the floor also flexes.

I went ahead and cut a section of the flooring out. Here are a couple of those.

What is the metal plate under there?

I know some of the foam is wet, I stuck a screwdriver in it and you could see the moisture on it.

Where in the world do I go from here??

Also, I won't do anymore work until I get a painter's suit or something to keep the fiberglass off my arms!

Well you have a complete restore on your hands, nothing unusal about that. I've looked at the pictures very closely but don't see the metal plate you're talking about?

Where do you go from here? Well just continue removing the old deck. You'll most likely have to remove the top cap from the hull to do the job right. You should also check your transom for rot as it would be rare for the deck and stringers to be that rotten without the transom as well.

Good Luck and let us know where we can help. Plenty of experience here in the Dry Dock.

In the second pic, just to the right of my nail bar is the metal plate. It sticks out past the cut about 1.5 inches and is approximately 1/8" thick.

Why do you say the stringers are that rotted? How can you tell? When you hit them with the nail bar, they sound pretty solid.

I really don't want to remove the top. I don't really have anywhere to put it.

Also, do I have to remove the flooring all the way out to the edge? If so, how do I recreate the little valley that runs part way down the edge?

This is the area that I was saying had a valley. It this pic, it just kinda dips down. Further up, under the helm, it has a hump in it, that is why I originally said valley.

that valley is the area between your hull sides and the top of the deck.

you dont look too rotten, so you may just want to cut 3 inches away from that valley.
adjust your circ saw so it it just the depth of the deck....no more !

this 3 inch away tactic will give you a "lip" to glass to ....it will also give you the old deck height.

the link in my sig will show you how to glass the underside and top of the deck...including gellcoating.

Thank you. I hope to go get some kind of painter's suit tomorrow and keep cutting. I also just read about the drill test and will try that after I get the wet foam out of the boat.

I like the idea of the 3" lip, hopefully it works for me. Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

I appreciate the help.

Edit: Damn, I just read your "in memory of" in your sig. I have not been active for awhile, but I used to get emails from Lester sometimes.
