'91 Yamaha 4 stroke 9.9hp high thrust won't go into reverse

On our last fishing trip we were low on gas and I turned on my Yamaha kicker to get us <br />home in our 18 foot Wooldridge. It took us over 4 hrs in heavy seas to make port.<br />Next time out the Yamaha wouldn't go into reverse, it just grinds. Any suggestions?

The big thing here ,is to determine where things are binding up.This could be a remote control unit and your answer could be as simple as a cable adjustmment.Same kinda goes with the tiller. If the shift shaft coupler is not engaged properly,then your symptoms.Lot of variables on this one ,so lets get specific.

I'm having a problem with my Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust. It goes into reverse, but unless you hold pressure on the shifter, it will pop out of gear. I've determined that it is more than simply an adjustment and it seems as though there is something blocking the rod which travels down to the lower unit so that it stops before the piece holding the shifter in gear falls into its notch.
