92 15 hp Evinrude...Am I missing something?

I've been beating my head trying to figure this out on my own before I have to tear into the carb and what not. I figured I give some of you experts a try first, though. I bought the motor 3 years ago from a man who kept it in his garage for years after retiring it. He would pull the rope every so often to make sure it would stay unseized over time. He kept it in good shape and after pulling it out of the garage, it fired right up and I bought it.

I had an engine shop do a carb kit on it shortly after and she ran good for awhile. Problem I'm having this summer began a few weeks ago (last summer didn't run her much as I was studying for the bar exam otherwise she sat outside under a cover stagnated). Anyway, what happens is when I put it in the water initially she fires right up and I speed off to my first fishing hole. After spending maybe 30-1hr fishing, I get ready to move on to the next hole. When I try to crank her up again, I have to choke it (usually only have to choke it on initial start up then she's good to go for the day). Then, even when she starts, it wants to cut off and does quite frequently until I run a few minutes with half choke. Once it gets passed a certain point of speed, I push the choke in and she runs fine. Other thing is that she dies on her own when I come to a slow idle. It is quite frustrating and I have to do this for the remainder of my trip each time I stop to fish. I must pull that damn cord 3-4 times before I can get her to stay running on 1/4 to 1/2 choke. When it will stay running after putting it in gear and I begin picking up speed is when I can ease the choke in and she want stall.

Maybe I need to have the carb looked again. By the way, I have cleaned the gas tank and put fresh gas and oil in and put a new primer bulb and line on. Still no luck. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I am fairly mechanical and have been studying up on how to do it. However, what frightens me is the starter rope and flywheel assembly. I'm not real sure how to disassemble/reassemble even though I've read about how to do it a few times...

Unless I missed something you have no need to remove the flywheel assembly or tear down the starter assembly (only move it out of the way) to remove the carb. Best of luck and I do agree it sounds like your carb. is the problem. Rick.

Ok, Levi. I got the carb off which was easier than I thought. I also bought a carb repair kit from the local dealer. It took my awhile to analyze the diagrams and actual parts once I disassmbeled the carb. One thing that was baffling is the location of the main jet. I finally figured out that the main jet is attached to the plastic valve in the bowl which slides onto the long skinny piece. The jet is much smaller than I thought. It simply screws into the plastic valve near the top. Does this all sound right? Also, upon closer inspection, I saw that the plastic valve piece was cracked near the top where the small rubber tube goes in. It looks as if it could be one of the culprits to my problem. I think I'm going to go ahead and order an new plastic valve. Thanks

Actually, the little screw that I was referring to in the previous post that came out of the plastic "nozzle well" is simple an orfice plug accroding to the diagram. If that's the case ,where in the hay is the main jet??

that is the high speed jet.you only have that and the low speed needle.when you put it back together lightly seat low speed then back out 1 turn

Re: 92 15 hp Evinrude...Am I missing something?

id start at 1 1/2 turns on the low speed take it out on the lake and put it in gear throttle it up until it will just stay running and then slowly turn the low speed needle in when it picks up throttle it down again repeat this till it spits back or shuts off then turn it back out a 1/4 of a turn and LEAVE IT that should be your best setting

and id replace that part if its only a few dollars

Re: 92 15 hp Evinrude...Am I missing something?

Thanks for all the great suggestions and help. I have ordered (1) nozzle well; (2) orfice plug (fits into nozzle well which is I believe also the "main jet"); (3) screws for bottom bowl as one of the screws was different from the other. Hopefully these will be here in a couple of days and I can put it all back together after cleaning everything and putting the carb kit to it. I'm glad I'm doing it myself this time as suggested since I KNOW I'm much more finicky than a repair shop would be plus it's my own baby and I know I'll do everything excellent and not cut corners. One more quick question: what is the long skinny "rod" that the nozzle well fits over? It appears to have two micro holes in the side and then a small hole on top to deliver gas or what not. I just haven't seen that part on any diagram...

Re: 92 15 hp Evinrude...Am I missing something?

Just for my own clarification...The high speed jet or main jet is the tiny screw that comes directly off the plastic piece called the nozzle well, correct?? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something. In this diagram of the carb (same make/model as mine), it would be number 23. They call it "orfice plug #54" for 15REL. I'm assuming my 15hp 1991 is an REL whatever that means...I'm just not sure why they don't call it main jet or high speed jet.

rybo. I have a '92 15 and have had the exact same problem. Please finish this thread and let me know how this worked out. I rebuilt the carb myself and know that all the parts are intact, but I may have made a mistake in assembly and will take it apart again. I'm hoping that the issue is a clogged tube or a bit of dirt in the nozzle well or something like that. I would really like to hear that you've solved this part of your problem and what ou think did it. Thanks.
