Hello to all. Just bought 92 170SS my plan is to transform it into more of a SFM. So a total change of splashwell is in store. Started tear down and found two heavy gauge boxes on each side of transom under splashwell. There was thinner gauge peice attached to it holding foam that went between SW and this box. So is this some sort of structural support for the transom? Do to the fact the SW does not have the heavy lip across front like on older models. Can I remove them and beef up newSW for support. Will ad some pics later this week.

Re: 92 170ss

The only thing that provides structural support for the transom is the triangular knee brace.

Shouldn't really be a whole lot of beefing up needed.

Here is some Starcraft porn for you guy's. Getting it fishable for this season will start on complete tear down in fall. I do not have the "knee brace" on transom it has two separate brackets. The aluminum box I describe is on the left of transom in picture. They must have changed design in early 90's. The newest SS on here looks to be a 87. I would like to make the area where Aluminum boxes are storage so if anybody know's if they are structural it would be a great help.

I use Mean Green from the dollar store and a stiff brush to clean with.
