Hi guys, I've been getting blown fuses in the tilt circuit and I want to replace the two wires that go into the tilt/trim motor. If i have the engine lifted above the trim part of the tilt/trim system, so that it's not using the hydraulics, can I take the cap off where the wires go in without any issues?

That motor came with 2 different style pumps.
A pic or a serial# or Model# helps.
Both styles.
The manual says.
The motors need to be down if your gonna remove just the electric motor cap.
The resivoir is sealed between the pump and motor.

no.

at the very minimum you will need new frame gaskets and sealing washers. if you do not make the motor waterproof then you may as well just go ahead and throw it in the trash.

@Jerry: It's the Mercury manufactured one - OE002651 I believe.
I've got a manual but I was just wondering how I'd go about replacing the two wires. Also, the electric motor bit where the wires go says only to open the cap with the motor fully trimmed up - I'm not looking at opening the oil bit, just replacing the wires.

@RRitt: It's just the top bit of the cylinder with the motor - surely that doesn't have gaskets? I'm not looking at getting into the hydraulic bit, just the motor. I only want to replace the wires. Will buy gaskets and washers if need be, however.

Re: '92 Force 90 Tilt/Trim question

For what it is worth, I have had lots of fun working on my tilt/trim system on my 1988 Force/Bayliner. ;>)

The brushes went bad (wore out) on my electric motor for the pump. My pump/motor/system may not be the same as yours, but they all depend on the same basic components in the electric motor. So. after fixing those wires going into your motor, you might take a look at the motor itself, especially the brushes. If they look good just leave them be, they are a bugger to get back in (springs).

And... it might not be a bad idea to check the tilt/trim switch itself --- I have replaced three ---- one that failed after only a few days. Not very reliable.

I guess what I am saying is that while you are at it, it might be a good idea to check these other electrical components, since wear and tear may cause them to fail as well. I finally took my electrical pump motor to an alternator rebuild place and they did a super job on it for a very reasonable cost.

That's a list of my usual suspects, anyway. Hope this helps.

When it comes to tilt and trim, One would be wise to listen to RRitt when he speaks.

@foodfisher: Sure, I'm very grateful for any advice given here. All I'm asking is how to change out the two wires that go into it. What state of tilt/trim should it be in, and what do I need other than gaskets/sealing washers? Any further info is most appreciated, and I am definitely listening!

if it is a prestolite then you take off top two bolts and pull off cap. then you pull off magnet frame and remove armature from frame. get 14/2 marine safety wire and replace existing. Take care not to knick, crack, cut, splice or otherwise damage the cable grommet. use soapy water to make grommet slide onto new cable. one wire solders to thermal breaker and the other uses a small barrel splice directly to brush wire. the brush card has to be removed carefully. it is tacked back into place by slight mushrooming of posts with solder iron. you will need new upper and lower gaskets along with two aluminum or stainless sealing washers. re-assemble motor from top to bottom. put top in vice, insert armature, insert gasket, lower magnet frame into place, install gasket into reservoir, lower reservoir into place, flip over and install frame bolts.

if it ias an eaton then it cannot be serviced. the cable grommet is not re-useable or replaceable. the cost of new housing with grommet from mercury is almost as much as a whole new motor. It is better to buy new motor.

 Tough decision being down under.

AUSTRALIA would make it an easy decision for me. I'd buy a chinese trim motor and avoid the whole scene where I am hunting obscure inch based parts in a metric country.

Jeez! That is a fair bit of work to replace a couple of wires. They do go into the bottom though, so I guess it's to be expected... I figure now that I might as well give it a crack, not a lot to lose. Hopefully following your instructions I can get it right. Thanks for the advice mate

Okay, had a go today. Decided to hotwire the tilt with a 20 amp fuse to see if it actually was the wires - no fuses blew and the tilt worked fine, however I'm wondering if that is relevant because it hasn't gone through the relay? Would I be right to assume that there is a short elsewhere in the wiring that is blowing the fuse if the tilt/trim works fine straight from the battery? Cheers.

I would agree with RRitt. You're pretty much eliminated the tilt/trim motor as the cause.
