92 Johnson 120hp charge coil voltage

I Read my charge coil voltage with a analoge volt meter and a standard digital meter. In both cases I got 90 volts on the AC scale. I read a post on this board that claimed that if I multiplied this number by approx 1.4 that I would get a ball park peak RMS figure. This poster claimed to have almost 20 years experience. After the corection I get 135 volts. Can anyone give their advice on whether this result is valid because of the way I took it. My manual says the range should be 175-200 volts DC taken with a peak RMS meter.<br /> Should I replace the stator? Robby

The charge coil output should be 175 volts or higher with peak reading meter at cranking rpms. Ohms 480+- 25. Check for short to ground by connecting one lead to A or B and one one lead to ground, meter should read open. Looks like may need a stator, if you trust your meter.

I read your other post about the fuse. The fuse is not part of the ignition system. The ignition switch power supply is connected to this fuse, when this fuse blows, it kills fuel primer, starter circuit, and other circuits that may be connected to the switch. The tilt/trim is connected direct to hot side of starter solenoid, no fuse.

Maybe someone has monkeyed with my wiring because with the fuse out the tilt/trim works only with the key on.<br /> Pute the fuse in and it works with or without the key on.<br />Also the choke, ignition, and starter work without the fuse in.

Well I found the probablem with my engine. The ground on the power pack was bad. I guess the fact that the stator was not in tolerance was not a probablem after all. My charge coil resistance was 410 ohms. My charge coil valtage (read on the ac scale of a standard volt meter) was 90volts with everything disconnected and the plugs out.Hope this helps somebody some day. Robbyusa@aol.com
