The rundown, its a 92 Johnson, 15hp, 2 stroke pull start.

Bought it from a neighbor and had been out on it with him once and everything was good, but it was months ago. So once I bought it all I had done was replace the gas tank, fresh fuel/oil, changed the spark plugs, and did some liberal spraying with carb cleaner (though I did not remove/disaasemble the carb, just sprayed into it).

Took it out for the first time and it started just fine, idled fine, and off we went. After 10-15 min wide open I throttled down (low wake zone) and it just stalled. Woudn't restart, even sounded different like there was no combustion at all. Trolled back in, and when I got home and cleaned it up it cranked up just fine and ran for it's flush.

Second time, same deal, started right up, idled fine, went flat out for another 10 min or so to the fishing spot, turned motor off, fished for 30 min or so, it did restart, went another 10-15 min to another spot, wouldnt restart shortly afterward. Same "dead" sound, like it wasn't even attempting. Got back to the house...it starts.

Plugs looked fine, even took them out this 2nd time when it wouldn't restart. Fuel bulb is always hard and full of fuel.

I'm thinking something is getting warm once it gets up to temp and shorting out, if so is there a common culprit? Ignition Coil? Charge coil (stator?) under flywheel?

Also I do have the tank vented so theres no vapor lock in the tank. My next "test" I'm going to take it out and just run it and see if it will eventually just stall/die in the middle of running. If it runs for 30min+ straight but then wont restart then I'm gonna be confused like heck.

*UPDATE*

Took the boat out last weekend, nice chilly day, clear skies. The day started just as explained before, a little messing with the choke and the motor started up/idled just fine. I picked a bridge to head towards at which point I'd turn around and head back to the dock, kill the motor, then attempt to restart. Cruised out at just under full throttle for an esimated distance of about 3 miles or around 10 minutes. Made it to the bridge and after about 200 yards after heading back the motor just died...a slight sputter as it just seemed to throttle down and stall. Upon trying to restart I got a few sputters then the "dead" sound when cranking. Trolled back in to dock.

After reading more about power packs and browsing various "kits" I'd noticed a part number discrepancy, instead of say 44-8874 the 92 part was 44-8875. On the 92 power pack kits specifically, it seems from my investigation that in 92 they added the S.L.O.W. system to the powerpack/ignitions, where upon getting too hot the engine shuts off. Granted the cooling system seems to function normally, it pees at idle and under load, perhaps its not operating optimally and eventually it shuts down? After reading about the SLOW system it seems if I remove the flywheel I'm looking for a tan wire. Snip the wire, cap it, and see if the problem persists? Is this about right? Any other insight into the SLOW system or my problem?

It's a rope start so no charge coil=no battery to charge.

It's a test issue, check for spark when it happens, no spark on both cylinders, probably powerpack heating up then killing spark, one cylinder probably a bad coil. There is a trigger coil under the flywheel which may be failing but I'd be placing bets on powerpack, they are notorious for dying and coming back to life. Check connectors and grounds for corrosion.

Powerpack is called an ignition module on this motor and looks to be under the flywheel.

Ah, the manual I have for this is the generic Seloc 1-70hp manual, so not all diagrams relate to my motor so I'm trying my best to reference the similarities. In one of the diagrams they showed a charge coil and battery charge coil as if they were two separate things, and made no reference to the power pack/ignition module. I've only seen passing reference to the power pack/ignition module.

Basic question so I know what/where I'm testing. Is the power pack where the initial charge is produced by the spinning magnets on the flywheel? Which then proceeds to the coils were the voltage is increased then sent to the plugs? Or is there another part in between?

Is there anything to test on the power pack other than "is it producing power to the coils" such as resistance or the ammount of voltage supplied? Or is this a "it works or it doesn't" kind of part? Much appreciatation for the help.

Welcome aboard.

Buy yourself a factory service manual if you don't have one. It will come in handy.

You will need a DVA meter if you want to test running output. Start by getting the motor warm and having it quit on you. Test for spark, if you have spark on only one cylinder swap the coils around and see if the spark follows. The trigger coil and Powerpack is one module on this motor. If it isn't coils then I'm thinking the only other thing it could be is the power pack/ignition module, i'm almost certain there is no charge coil as it's manual start unless it uses it to power the ignition module, i'm not certain about the CD2UL ignition.

I'm thinking this thing probably has a charging coil, just not a stator which has the charging coils for a battery. Looking at the diagram I can only see a stator, charge coil and ignition module. How else would you power the ignition module without a charge coil. Could be either or.

Yeah, after looking around I found a power pack conversion kit that lists among its parts a charge coil and sensor coil so I'd assume it does have one.
Kit in question http://www.marineengine.com/parts/part_details.php?pnum=CDI113-4488&ptype=&Engine=&Model=

I'm starting to think this Seloc manual is more headache than its worth and will probably be taking an above posters advice with the OEM manual. Too many diagrams with all the various HP motors to cover, so I have diagrams not for my motor, and missing diagrams that I need for it. I was just dissuaded by the $80 price vag vs the Seloc $30. Get what you pay for. ;)

I'll be taking it out again here before too long and will do the long test run and see if it eventually outright dies while under load. I dont have the DVA meter, just your standard digital ohms/voltage meter. Thanks again.

I have an '89 15, with the same behavior as yours, and i know, these engine can idle well on only 1 cylinder, I'm thinking my engine and may be yours has a problem with the powerpack. That's one of my winter project, I dont know the price and availability of that powerpack.

FYI. Powerpacks and other ignition parts are still available through iBoats, your local dealer or online at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=a0eb9e1a9d7943576646e5a8587ca7e7

It may idle on one cylinder but my motor puts out its full power when I open it up so I don't believe I'm running on one cylinder. For 15hp it scoots! I'm leaning to either the powerpack or the wiring associated with it. When it won't restart I hear absolutely no combustion going on. I pulled the fuel line after the pump and on cranking I get some fuel pumping action so it's got to be spark on both cyls. Will know more when I spend a full day on the water trying various things.

The slow system is tied to engine temperature, if it does indeed have it. The original ignition module should have an "s" in the part number indicating SLOW. You need to check engine temp when this happens to see if it's overheating. But slow isnt' supposed to "kill" the engine, only limit the RPM the motor can achieve in the event of overheating, 3000rpm I believe.

Upon looking at the Evinrude site I discovered the part # 0583667 is the same for 91 and 92. Iboats lists a PP from Sierra but the strange part is that Sierra's own 2010 PDF stops at 88 and resumes at 93, it doesn't list the one made from 89-92. The part numbers you provided don't match up to anything I've read.
