The rundown, its a 92 Johnson, 15hp, 2 stroke pull start.
Bought it from a neighbor and had been out on it with him once and everything was good, but it was months ago. So once I bought it all I had done was replace the gas tank, fresh fuel/oil, changed the spark plugs, and did some liberal spraying with carb cleaner (though I did not remove/disaasemble the carb, just sprayed into it).
Took it out for the first time and it started just fine, idled fine, and off we went. After 10-15 min wide open I throttled down (low wake zone) and it just stalled. Woudn't restart, even sounded different like there was no combustion at all. Trolled back in, and when I got home and cleaned it up it cranked up just fine and ran for it's flush.
Second time, same deal, started right up, idled fine, went flat out for another 10 min or so to the fishing spot, turned motor off, fished for 30 min or so, it did restart, went another 10-15 min to another spot, wouldnt restart shortly afterward. Same "dead" sound, like it wasn't even attempting. Got back to the house...it starts.
Plugs looked fine, even took them out this 2nd time when it wouldn't restart. Fuel bulb is always hard and full of fuel.
I'm thinking something is getting warm once it gets up to temp and shorting out, if so is there a common culprit? Ignition Coil? Charge coil (stator?) under flywheel?
Also I do have the tank vented so theres no vapor lock in the tank. My next "test" I'm going to take it out and just run it and see if it will eventually just stall/die in the middle of running. If it runs for 30min+ straight but then wont restart then I'm gonna be confused like heck.
*UPDATE*
Took the boat out last weekend, nice chilly day, clear skies. The day started just as explained before, a little messing with the choke and the motor started up/idled just fine. I picked a bridge to head towards at which point I'd turn around and head back to the dock, kill the motor, then attempt to restart. Cruised out at just under full throttle for an esimated distance of about 3 miles or around 10 minutes. Made it to the bridge and after about 200 yards after heading back the motor just died...a slight sputter as it just seemed to throttle down and stall. Upon trying to restart I got a few sputters then the "dead" sound when cranking. Trolled back in to dock.
After reading more about power packs and browsing various "kits" I'd noticed a part number discrepancy, instead of say 44-8874 the 92 part was 44-8875. On the 92 power pack kits specifically, it seems from my investigation that in 92 they added the S.L.O.W. system to the powerpack/ignitions, where upon getting too hot the engine shuts off. Granted the cooling system seems to function normally, it pees at idle and under load, perhaps its not operating optimally and eventually it shuts down? After reading about the SLOW system it seems if I remove the flywheel I'm looking for a tan wire. Snip the wire, cap it, and see if the problem persists? Is this about right? Any other insight into the SLOW system or my problem?
