I have a 24ft pontoon. It says I can put up to a 125 motor on this. I have a friend giving me a 150 merc.. The weight difference isn't any from a 125 to a 150, but yes the force from the bigger motor would be a big difference. I could govern the motor so it will never peak the max speed though. The only reason I am thinking about it is because I am getting it for almost free. Its coming from my neighbor friend.....but since he is giving it to me, he said if I sold it to make a profit, he would pretty much cut my legs off. He doesn't care if I sell it years down the road with the pontoon, just not now for a profit. Anyone think this would be a BIG bad idea? Insurance ran all the numbers for my boat and the motor and has said a thing. just looking for ideas here........

You'll be teetering on the edge if liability ever becomes an issue, but if you and your insurance co. are good with it, so be it. The technical issues are something else. First, it needs to be a long shaft. Is it? As a precaution, I would beef up the transom / motor pod.
