A Mercury dealer, for $30 a piece.

Or an auto parts store for $10.

Buy 2, keep a spare on the boat for that day that will come.

Local U-Pull it junkyard. Most older GM cars have them and they are weaterproof too. It is a standard 5 pin electrical relay. Don't want to go the the yard? Local electric supply--about 17 bucks.

i was going to stay silent ... but .... The "bosch type" 5 pin automotive relay is a universal standard. It was designed for headlights but proved to be such a great design that it is now used in everything from boat trim systems to RV security systems and car stereos. Don't go pay $15 for one or get used stuff from a junkyard. Go to a car stereo place. They use hundreds of them to switch on and off power to stereos and alarms. When you buy in bulk the cost is under $2 ea. You should be able to get a brand new one in $3-$5 range. Look for one that has a bead of glue around the base of plastic housing. The glue will keep out moisture and make it last longer in a boat. You can mail order from Parts Express for cheap - but if all you order is relays then postage might be a killer.

Re: 93 120 Force tilt relay

I recently had to replace one of the trim relays on my 1990 120hp, and the 5-pin automotive would not work. On the side of the relay it shows the contact arrangement in the normally open and normally closed positions and they did not match with the relays that were installed. I didn't look at them at first and it tripped the circuit breaker. I had to order one, so I just ordered 2 from boats dot net and kept one as a spare. They were $20 each.

i would suggest that either you have an abnormal type of Force or that the "generic" relays you got were not actually generic. Most probably it was the relays. the relay should be 12v 5pin - aka bosche ... pin87a is normally closed, located in the middle, and connected to ground. If your engine uses different relays then you have an abnormal engine.

These were the only relays NAPA, Advance, or OReilly had on the shelf. The diagram on the relay itself shows two output pins (#87) and they are connected together. When energized this ties 12v directly to ground I believe. I was just warning to check the off-the-shelf relay before installing

There are different relays. The ones for the force t&t are the most common ones. I bought mine from autozone, and they had 3 different types. Bring your relay in, or at least you make sure the diagram on the side is the same.

go to a car stereo installer - or ebay - or amazon. It will be right part for force without having to worry. If you go to NAPA they may have something meant for a 1950 tractor or something.

So I MAY have used a relay that has 87 NOT 87a, would this cause my spark and sudden loss of power to the boat?

87 and 87a refers to the post, not the part number.
The iBoats link to these is;

The Napa link for the relay is;

or for tractor parts;

Here is a good pic of the relay with schematic on it;

As far as this causing sparks and loss of power.... Short circuits can do some weird stuff including interfering with your CD modules, Sparks and (worst case) fire and explosions. If you have a voltage meter, you can check for, and locate short circuits. The T&T relays are easy to troubleshoot if that is your problem by simply disconnecting them from your engine and running it. If the problem goes away, your problem either lies with the part you disconnected or relies/ on an action of that part (downstream devices, or devices dependent on).

I think you said you bought new relays, is the problem of tripping your breaker still there? Are you sure the wires are connected to the proper terminal on the relay (I had to remove mine when I bought a new T&T pump. It would be easy to mix up the wires at that point)? Do you have a manual?

I'm not 100% sure I like that NAPA relay. It is electrically correct but the housing looks like one of the snap together types. ask the clerk if you can open the box and get a look at the housing. if the housing looks like it will snap apart and/or allow moisture to get inside then plan on putting a solid bead of glue around the seam.
