Do you think a 120 is to much for my 17' whaler? Or I have a 2002 100hp yamaha four stroke. What do you think?

Put the largest one the boat will legally hold in my opinion, otherwise but I like to ski and not run my engines hard. 4 stroke is way quieter for your sanity if you have lots of people on it. I would rather keep a more expensive motor running more often so it doesn't get gummed up. I have a feeling your legal limit is 90hp but I doubt anyone would care at least in FL that is.

Just my 3 cents

The two motors in question probably weigh about the same, so I'd go with the 120hp if it's a two stroke. A 17' fiberglass boat is usually rated for 120, but I'd check the data plate to make sure.

Check the data plate on the boat for both insurance and law enforcement reasons.

As for the 2 motors in question you'll probably be more than pleased with the 120 and maybe a little disapointed in the 100.

My 17' whaler is only rated for 100hp, I have a 90 hp 2 stroke on it and it flies, if I ever repower I will be looking for a 70hp, still enough power and plenty get up and go

Depends on which 17' Whaler you have. The greatest majority of 16-17' Whalers are rated for 100HP MAX and perform well (38-40 MPH) with 70HP. 100HP will push them to 45-50MPH. 120HP is gross overkill for those lightweight (under 1000#) hulls.

There are a few 17' Outrage models rated for 150HP.

PLEASE believe that the people who rated the hull know exactly what they are doing.

HP rating aside, the transom is rated for 400# MAX. If you decide to go with the Yammy 100F, be sure you don't put over 400#, total, on the transom.

I always got best all-round performance and handling on my 16 and 17 Whalers with 70HP.

I would keep it legal!
I have witnessed many tickets to boaters during LE or Coast Guard Safety Inspections for motors exceeding the data plate rating! That happened in Florida!
Also, if you don't have insurance on your boat (especially liability) you are taking a hugh chance! Laws are changing and Maritime attorneys are having fun with wake damage claims and spilled fuel claims among others. Remember, if your at the helm of a boat you are responsible for anything that happens!
Enjoy your boat and be responsible! Enjoy a Happy New Year!
