The motor has Quick Start which will bring the rpm up a bit until it warms up. Sounds like it's working but you may have to bump the primer a couple of times as it first warms up.You shouldn't have to give any throttle though. How are the carbs & plugs?

this is happening on warm startup and just started. it used to stay up longer i think. carbs rebuilt 6 mos ago and plugs are 1 month old. 2 brand new batteries. thanks for your time Dale

From what you say, it's hapening just after initial starting & also after a 'warm' start.
Dhadley is spot on as usual, the quick start operates after a warm start too, but only briefly, as well as a cold start. Supprised you hadn't noticed it before.
The motor could stall out if it had cooled down more than you'd thought, you could try the test again, & give it a push on the primer just before it stalls to see if that restores it. I reckon after it has run a bit longer (thus warmer) it'll go back to it's normal idle speed.

Its normal to have to bump the choke ( key) in to maintain idle speed for about the first 30 seconds.
If you have different symptoms , you haven't described them.:p
Sounds normal from here.
Is it doing something different from previous runs?
